View Full Version : Rotary Practise
I recently finally took the plunge and purchased a Rotary polisher after experiencing the PC for over a year. The pictures of Brazo's recent excellent work finally pushed me to buy one along with his excellent find of the Aote rotary on ebay at only £20.
I was to much of a wimp to take the rotary stright to a car so I set of to the scrapyard at the weekend in hunt of a practise panel. I found this lovely bonnet lying on the floor, here it is in all its glory.

After a wash and clay the bonnet was look a little cleaner.

Next the fun began with the rotary. I started off with a nice mild pad and polish in the form of Meguiars #82 and a green sonus pad. This made a small improvement but I was looking for better. Next came Meguiars #83 and a white LC polishing pad, result. I applied 4 small pea size drops of polish around the centre of the pad spread the polish around quarter of the bonnet @ 600RPM, I was suprised at how the polisher bogged down with no pressure. Once the polish was spread out I incread the speed to 900RPM made 2 passes inspected for defects and heat. The panel was still cool and defects remained so I primed the pad again increased the speed to 1500 made 4 passes and result. Only deep isolated random scrathces remained that only a repaint would fix.
I followed Meguiars #83 with Meguiars #82 on a green sonus pad using the same procedure as above. This was then followed by a layer of Meguiars NXT and finally a layer of Nattys Blue. The end result.

I was quite pleased with the end result for my first experience of rotary polishing. From a faded red bonnet to a bright glossy bonnet in just over half an hour. Even better still I remained clean with no sling or buffer hopping. Admitidley it is going to be different taking a rotary to a car, but I've now got a good a taster of what rotary polishing is like and with time, patience, correct pads and polishes I am more confident with the rotary than before.
I've got a lovely swirled panther black tuned Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 coming to see me next week so the roary will make another appearance then.
As for my scrap bonnet, next job is to practise W&D on the polished half and then polish the sanding marks out.
Thanks for reading

good work Andrew, old chap!
Aint used mine yet, but may give it a go this week with the cyclo.
No buffer hop at all, eh? sounding good.
Excellent turnaround from the state of the panel at the start.

Nice one K80.
I too have a couple of panels that I practice on. Thats an amazing result there, nice one.
Here's a couple of pics of mine, as I played at removing industrial fallout (foundry iron oxide dust) from an old AX bonnet with an acid based decon kit.

The same sulphuric acid mix as used on the TT225 Shaun.
Clayed it half hour later.
Then hit it with the PC, white SFX and SFX2.
Had to try the acid out before pouring it over the TT:D
I'm trying to find the pic of a black bonnet I practice putting holograms on then removing with the Metabo turned up high with SSR2.5.

After using the aote rotary I really rate it for what it is i.e. a £20 polisher! The fact that it bogs down at lower speeds is imo agood thing as it makes it that bit safer although at higher speeds it doesn't bog down.
However I am now in a quandry do I copy Steve and buy a meatabo as I've taken the leap and a rotary will now become part of my ****nal or do i buy another aote for when/if mine packs up?
Decisons decisons!

LOL, yeah, I'm wondering this too. Much that I would love a PC, I think it's a bit overkill for the Smart I've got, I mean, the PC will be the same size as the car...
I may go for that polisher from Motorworld and get an old panel and practice on..:)

unfortunatly you will probably need a PC aswell,
a rotary will help in defect removal and make it much quicker and easier than a PC, put you may also impart micro-marring with a rotary which is much easier to remove by PC.
also a PC is better for applying Sealants, glazes and waxes.

no its as well as, the pc is very safe to use especially for beginers, the rotary can be dangerous for your paint in untrained hands  , hence why people are practising, i wouldnt expect to do a whole car with the rotary unless it was really bad, and even then i would finish with a pc ,and i would use a pc regulaly on my car were as i would only use the rotary the once (unless i get a small area of damage)

I followed #83 with #82.
That is indeed the polisher I bought. There are quite a few people who have purchased one now. Excellent service from the guy including next day delivery. Although it didnt come with a 17m spaner to change the backing plate so I bought one from Machine Mart along with a 5inch backing plate.
Paul
Is the guy from Meguiars UK still able to get the cyclos?
Not a hop in sight maybe i was lucky but I was ultra carefull.
Steve
Nice work on that bonnet, hang it in your garage!
Brazo
I think im going to keep using the Aote until it dies and then purchase either the Metabo or Makita.

more like the megs is a rebadged motorworld one ;) , ps folks its only any good for applying wax and removing products, it will not remove swirls, even so it may be handy

Looks like I need a PC then. Got some terrible swirls on the black bodywork (tridion), which I *think* is powdercoated..:(
