View Full Version : How many times can you safely use ssr2.5?

I was wondering how many times you can safely use SSR2.5 / IP with 4" cutting pad before you start to go through the clear coat as i have done it twice on the clio 172 but there is still some small marks i would like to get out.
How much:buffer: can it take before i damage the clear coat / paint?
Kind of like how long a piece of string is, its a tough question.
You can only be sure if you have a paint depth/thickness gauge otherwise its an educated guess.
I have used ssr2.5 or equivalent maybe 4 times over the last 2 years I try not to over step that mark just to be safe.
Say I am keeping a car 4 years I will deep cleanse 8 times.

Far too many variables to even guess at it.
Paint thickness gauges measure *total* paint thickness i.e. primer, colour coat and clear coat. Don't think any gauge can tell you how much clear you have.
How hard is *your* particular clear coat.?
How long do you work the 2.5.?
How many passes over the same point on your paint.?
How much pressure do you put on the pad.?
If it's only isolated spots that are bothering you now then I would treat them with ScratchX or similar by hand then use a polishing pad and maybe SSR1 to go over the whole car.

as above, so many variables, and differnet paint thicknesses etc, best thing would be to not do it to often, do it say once a year (if not longer) then spend more time being carefull with how you treat it, i.e use 2 bucket method, wool wash mit, waffle weave drying etc etc, i tend to do one biggy then be carefull after that and dont do a big one again, then again i dont keep my cars very long :o

Cheers Guys, I understand that there is many variables and it is hard to say as all depends on thickness of paint etc. But once or twice a year i should be safe.
How harsh is IP? Is it on par with #80 or ssr2?

i would say ip is as harsh if not harsher that #83, but it doesnt leave any hazing like #83 does
If you are that bothered about your clear then just buy some Vanilla Moose or Red Machine glaze to hide the swirls?
I am now beginning to opt for this as I have machine polished the car in some spots a little more than I should of but hey! lol.

I'm waiting for my IP to get rid of some little bits that are annoying me on my car, then after that its gonna be the method of being really careful when washing and just keep it well polished/glazed/waxed etc etc, far safer that way :)
You should be ok since Seat paint is pretty tough my current paint is soft even scratches if the back of your nail drags on it lightly lol.
Funnily enough I found MG paintwork to be pretty hard, well the wee TF is not sure about the others.

I know the Seat paint is hard but no need to take more clear off than necessary, cos you never know when you might need to do some serious buffing :buffer: lol

Hi mate FWIW Clio paint is quite thick, I measured two RS's down at GDI today both averaging 150 microns. Using a rotary and SSR2.5 we cut through some nasty swirls at a loss of 4 -5 microns.
Please read above with uusal disclaimers :)

which is pretty goood when you consider the 100 microns of that seat paint the other day :doublesho

Guess that was mine :doublesho

How long do you work the 2.5.?
Dave
That isn't really a factor Dave if you work ssr2.5 for 5 minutes once it has "bloomed" or reached its less abrasive level the abrasives will just dissapear and the polish will dry up.
If you work it for 1 minute then it will probably make the paint worse as the abrasives have not broken down fully so doing this twice is worse than working the polish for longer twice.
The longer you work a good polish the more you will break down the abrasives and therefore the better finish you leave.
