Right-o….. first of all some of you may remember my post a few days ago about a good friends from works dark green BMW 318i with clear coat failure on the bonnet.

So the time had come, the car was left with me and I was told not to rush as the owner had another car they was using to run about in, which was a relief

The Before’s;

Day One
The car was washed with a wash mit and washing-up liquid to remove old wax and grease build up, after washing I found out how bad the paint really was, the car was covered in swirls, further that, more noticeably down the near side were long scratches running the length of the car (possibly from tree branches)

I moved on to the interior, carpets were hovered. Dash, trim, and seats were washed down with a mixture of APC and warm water using a microfiber, carpets were wet vac’ed with water and a strong solution of APC. Seats were then cleaned and feed with Megs leather cleaner and conditioner, Dash and trim was then treated with AG vinyl and rubber care. Glass cleaned with Megs NXT glass cleaner.

Day Two
The body was then clayed using megs blue clay and megs last touch, now to tackle the swirls and minor scratches, I taped of a section of the boot to test some products, first up was megs #80, this really didn’t touch the swirls, so then went with souns sfs-2 two passes on speed 5 using sfx yellow cutting pad, this started to work but was slow, I decided to try scratch X on a yellow cutting pad, this really cleared up the paint leaving a nice gloss, I finished this up with another pass with souns sfs-2 and the results were clear,

I repeated these steps to the rest of the car wet flatting where needed

After;

This scratch just had to go;

It was about mid day on day 2 when I remembered I promised I would give my neighbours van a quick wash and detail, so work was postponed for a few hours while I completed the van.

Day Three
It was now time to tackle the worrying bonnet, one thing that was pleasing is that what ever I did to the bonnet I really couldn’t make it worse, All around the failed clear coat was what looked like cracks in the paint (poss the start of the fail) I decided that these were making the appearance of the bonnet worse, and decided to try and soften the edges of the cracks with a light pass with scratch X, slowly building up speed an pressure the edges started to fade, I gave a quick pass with souns sfs-2 and the job was 100% better than before.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/k18dan/Jens%20BMW%20316i/After/DSC01255.jpg

The shine on the paint was then sealed in with Auto Glyms extra gloss protection.

Afters;

So all in all a full weekends work, although this was a taxing detail, I was very pleased with the end results and was very surprised with the defects I could remove with the PC . :wave:

Outstanding transformation!

You can just spot the failed clear coat in the last bonnet pic. The change you have made to it is simply stunning - I would not have thought that was possible.

Top job :thumb:
