If your looking at spending that much, spend an extra few quid and get the Ipod Classic 80gb http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0196872716.121551031 7@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgadeeigmjddjcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=055880&category_oid=-32013
Holds plenty of music and video and battery is good.

i'd go for the sony as i am not an apple person! always prefer to seek comfort in something that through the seriously biased eyes of the testers is actuallty a better device than the ipods!
But have alook on www.ebuyer.co.uk at mp3/4 players, they are often a lot cheaper than the high street stores!

If you only need up to 8 gig then the Ipod Nano is where it is at IMO. The classic I have myself (160gb) and its quite a bulky bit of kit in comparison to the Nano. Before that I had a 1st generation nano but I had three all of which just stopped working after a while which was a pain in the rear.
That Sony looks interesting though, I had one of their older units (HD5) and the sound quality through a decent set of cans listening to uncompressed was far above that of the Ipods I have had. Dunno if that one is as good though. I understand they have changed their software since I had the HD5, a lot of people complained out it being poor but I never had any real issue with it.
