when browsing the internet when not using wifi you get symbols at the side of the 02 sign, i have had a box with a hole symbol, a 3g symbol and a E symbol, why does it choose these , because as far as i can tell the 3g is the fastest and thats what i want it to stop on, can anyone explain what and why its doing it ?

3g is quickest, e is for edge which is next best then the last one is GPRS.

The issue is 3g and edge have limited coverage, so it gives you the best available

The blue square with white circle in is the GPRS connection :thumb:

Not that fast - Can't think of the figures at the moment, but it's better than GSM, but slower than Edge.

Your question is 'Can I manipulate the network stack in Leopard?'

The short answer is 'No', given that the phone's user interface does not allow you access.

If you are really keen, you can file an enhancement request at

bugreporter.apple.com

as it might find its way into 10.6, which will migrate to the phone.

Hope: 2.0.1 firmware is due

Surely this has nothing to do with that though fjs? This is surely just the iPhone using the 'best' connection available to it at any given moment, in the following heirarchy?

- Wifi (best)
- 3G
- Edge
- GPRS

Or is it not that simple?

That is what I am saying. It is using the best connection, according to the judgement of the 2 people who program the network stack. I have great respect for their efforts to refine the stack since Jaguar in particular.

On a Mac, you can have multiple network 'locations'. The iPhone is working on just one, using the same underlying software. You could construct a second 'location' for just 3G and switch between them. This answers the initial question.

Since you are limited on the standard interface to which settings you can access, you can ask Apple to change things if you want this feature - the ability to modify 'locations'.

Hence the initial reply from me.

So far I have got them to change the kernel timeslicing to play dance music properly when paging to VM, add keyboard layouts, and change the network interface through this bug reporting mechanism.
