lots of masking off! Windows can be sprayed with gloss varnish but more often than not it looks crappy and it's usually more realistic to leave them totally unvarnished. You I wouldn't brush a varnish on because, quite frankly it will look like a complete abortion.
If you haven't already painted the kit, it's important to sand the kit with the inest paper you can get just to give the surface a little bite, and then spray with a primer coat first (this is always the case with models, it's best practise. paint has trouble and behaves differently when applied straight onto plastic.) Any auto primer will do, but I recommend Tamiya's paints, primers and varnishes which you can get as brush paint (for brush or airbrush) or as rattle-can aerosol sprays.
