Returning to the detailing world (ex newbie)

I am returning to the detailing world with my current car below:

Had various company cars and cars I wasn't too bothered about for the last 8 years. This my a F30 330D I picked up just over 12 months ago and its not got a few lights scratches and swirl marks. I used to regularly was/polish my other golfs, type r's etc before family grew but now want to get back into keeping her clean. I still have my porter cable, stocked up with some products and bought a couple of new buckets.

I have been looking around for polish recommendations and its a minefiled of brands, abrasiveness and what to use on my type of paint/clear coat

What would people suggest for me to use after washing and claying to take out the light marks before I finish with SXP? I will need new pads as I could build houses with my previous ones :)

Thanks

Haha that was 100 yards down from the dealer when I bought it so not tuned in by me, quick picks before driving on.

Hi pubcrawler great to see you back.

Polishing machines, pads and polishes has come a long way in the last 8 years.

Your car's paint is rock hard, there are harder paints around but not many ie ceramiclear Merc paints, Lambos etc. On a scale of 1 to 10, it would be around 9 on the scale.

The porter cable is inadequate with weak ( by today's standards ) old school motor that is also noisy. 8mm throw grossly insufficent also when you factor in a couple of mm lost in pad flex as well. Luckily there are plenty of cheap chinese 15mm DA avail on ebay, aliexpress etc that is the same as the DAS 6 pro plus.

In terms of polishes, what type of defects do you need to remedy?

For RIDS I would recommend MF pad such as the Buff and Shine URO fibre+compounds such as Scholl S3 XXL, Menz 400, 3D 501 etc and for minor swirls Scholl S20 black + navy spider pad; this combo will finish down very well with your hard paint there will be very little need to use a softer pad+finer polish like one might need on soft paints.

Thanks for info, just ordered some Scholl SP20 and the navy spider pad. Will have a look around for some polishing machines the PC was getting a bit worn so need an upgrade. Anything I should be looking for?

Lots avail on the market.

Locally from the UK there is the DAS 6 Pro Plus, make sure you go for the Plus and not the DAS6/ 6 pro cos they are much the same as your porter cable.

From Aliexpress China there are plenty of packages like this:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/CLOV...796004781.html

comes with 4 qty pads ( looks like shinemate pads )
