There's no need to protect it, it already will be. To clean periodically wipe with a slightly damp microfibre will be enough. If you have heavier soling then get some Dr Leather wipes.

I have an F30 M-Sport with the standard Dakota black leather. Not tried the wipes myself but the Dr Leather spray with a good microfibre cloth did a good job of shifting some grime off what I thought...
