An interview with Detail Ecosse

Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

Hi im Gav 28 years old born and bred in Aberdeen.

What else can I tell you about me?

I live with my girlfriend who ive been with for 7 great years. I enjoy spending time with mates and family and looking forward to a three week holiday in Australia and New Zealand in March.

How did you ‘get into’ detailing?

Ive always been interested in detailing/valeting even before i could drive i looked after all the family and a few friends cars. Once i got my first car i spent more time waxing it than driving it.

How long have you been detailing at ‘this’ level?

At 'this level' id say around 18months or so, before that i just did it as a weekend thing charging small amounts to cover products etc, i bought my first machine polisher(terrible thing) about 5 years ago then progressed onto the PC and rotary.

How did you learn to machine polish?

As i mentioned above got my first machine polisher from halfords iirc but soon realised it wasnt up to the job so got myself a PC and slowly began building up time on it, then i guess the natural step came moving to the rotary, also spent a day with DaveKG a good while back which was great. Every detail brings a new challenge and as everyone says 'you never stop learning'.

How many cars have detailed over the years?

Never really thought about it a couple 100 i guess.

Tell me about your first detail?

I guess it would really be my first car(Nova GSi) i spent a week or so in my mums garage cleaning every inch of it, arches, suspension, engine bay, interior and exterior the whole works. My first paid detail was a focus st170 which belonged to a chap i ised to work with.

What is your favourite car to detail and why?

My favourite car has been a Jag XKR i just love the long swooping lines.

Do you prefer to detail a Supercar or everyday car?

Really not bothered every car is treated with the same respect but i do look forward to the expensive cars in the diary, also being a BMW man i like doing BM's

What piece of detailing kit do you think every detailer should have in their arsenal? (excluding the obvious stuff like wash mitts etc.)

A good PTG, but everyone says that i also think things like the 3M sun gun are important and also a nice working environment imo is essential ie unit/premises/workshop.

What are your current favourite brands and why?

I really like Zaino but also still love Zymol and Swissvax waxes as they are lovely to use.

What do you do when you’re not detailing?

My first passion outside detailing is football both playing and watching, i play for my local side having played at a fairly high level when i was younger-i probably took it way to seriously, also try to watch the Dons as often as i can. I also play golf and enjoy eating out with friends and enjoy a few beers after the football with all the boys. Also i have done a couple of driving experience days which are great fun.

A few quick fire questions
Ferrari or Lambo ?

Ferrari

Wax or Sealent ?

Wax

Fish and chips or bangers and mash ?

Fish n chips

McDonald's or Burger King?

Burger King(nicer chips) and you cant beat i whopper.

You can, but you have to go to In-n-Out burger in the US to get it
