Interview with Showshine

Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

Well i'm Lee and have been into detailing for years. Decided on a career change some time ago and took on starting my own business.
I live with my Mrs and 3 of her children in Staffordshire.
I'm 31 years old and own and run Showshine detailing

What else can I tell you about me?

I love cars (As most of us do on here ) and i'll hopefully get my first V8 this year as a treat for me and the Mrs although i'll be in the van 90% of the time

How did you ‘get into’ detailing?

It all started when i was little i suppose when i used to help my grandad clean his Mini Metro.
I also used to go around the streets with a bucket and sponge asking if people wanted their car washing for a quid and had a little round of 20 or so people every week so i suppose my business aspirations started then lol.
When i hit 17 and got my first car which was a blue rover 111 i looked after it really well to the shock of my neighbours who thought i was mad.
The passion has grown from then to now where i have a van and one on the way and do this full time.

How long have you been detailing at ‘this’ level?

I would say 2 years but hobby wise 15 years

How did you learn to machine polish?

I did have an old polishing machine but it was a shocker so over 2 years ago i got a scrap panel and a G220 and practised 4-5 hours per night (Garden was like Steptoes). Then moved onto the rotary using panels again. I love machining a car and seeing the results and was hooked from day 1

How many cars have detailed over the years?

Hard to say but i would say as a hobby 50-60.
Since being self employed i would say 20 paint corrections, 10-15 enahncements and say 30 new car details.

Tell me about your first detail

I would say my rover because i had the cotton buds out on that one.
I picked it up new from the dealership and it had been valeted but didn;t look right so i got it home and gave it a good wash with stuff i got from the body shop down the road.
Got my cotton buds out and cleaned that car within an inch of its life and even Rover commented on how clean it was when it went in for service.
I even told them not to wash it lol and that was 14 years ago

What do you drive and how often is it detailed?

I now drive a Ford Transit van and it is the workhorse but it gets washed every week or in the week aswell if i have downtime.

What is your favourite car to detail and why?

I love detailing a pig of a car to see the turnaround. I have a Mini Cooper that i do every month and i really enjoy that one as it has no hidden gaps where nasty dirty water pops out from and for some reason i look forward to doing that one every month

Do you prefer to detail a Supercar or everyday car?

Everyday car

What piece of detailing kit do you think every detailer should have in their arsenal? (excluding the obvious stuff like wash mitts etc.)

Megs #16 paste wax - For £13 it is probably the product with best value on the market IMO - A total must

What are your current favourite brands and why?

Dodo Juice because their stuff is quality and almost the whole car can be done with one brand (OCD kicking in again)

Also I love my Zaino for the cracking finish it leaves

What do you do when you’re not detailing?

Spend time with the family chilling or on DW of course.

A few quick fire questions
Ferrari or Lambo ? Lambo
Wax or Sealent ? Sealant
Fish and chips or bangers and mash ? Fish and chips
McDonald's or Burger King? Maccy D's
Coffee or Tea? Tea (Drinking one now whilst i type this )

Thanks for the info Lee.

I know time is money, and its time consuming to stop & take pics, but when we going to see some write ups?
