They'll learn how to use an apostrophe on a phone though. They'll also learn not to add them where they shouldn't be.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

11 ready for high school I would say is about right. Dreading our daughter (10 at mo) getting 1 as she'll drop it within a week and break it or will lose it. We then have dilemma of teaching her to look after things and not replace it or get her a new one for peace of mind.
We allowed her out on her own last Summer hols to a local playground (2mins walk away) to allow her freedom and responsibility. Not too bad as we live in a village and all was fine until a local troublemaker started appearing. Daughter and friends weren't happy then and kept away.

I'm not sure if things have changed that much from when I was a kid 37 ish years ago. I used to disappear after breakfast on my bike take some lunch and not be back until dinnertime. As long as mum thought she knew where we were everything was ok. Yes there were places and kids I'd avoid going near but that to me was a life lesson that I've used many times since. Stranger danger was about then too, no different to today I'd say. Wife and I are different with the girls though, I'm more "let them learn from mistakes" whereas wife thinks they need checking on every 2mins. We go camping a lot and last year I took them as wife had to work. For me it was great, I sat in the sun drinking beer for hours on end while the girls explored the site and playground. Wife would have had us up every 10mins checking on them😃😃

Lol the days of stale bread jam sandwiches made the night before. Drinking water from the local stream. Doing your own thing until you were hungry and went home for tea. Then back over the park until dark.
Then get up the next day and do it all again .making our own entertainment.

Now it's playbox this xstation that tintyweb and telly.
KIDS TODAY DON'T KNOW THEY ARE BORN.
We got a puncture we fixed it ( probably badly admittedly) not winge and wine at mum and dad until they got fed up and drove you about then bought you a new tube....

Bring back the 70s

No way on this planet would my Wife let my son out with 500 mates at his side, she is over protective but i dont blame her for that. The local tesco was held up twice over xmas and the post office was done for the seventh time in 4 years.

We have an off licence 100 yards up the road that gets robbed every 6 months. As soon as we have enough funds we are out of here. It used to be a nice area but after a near local estate was disgarded of its scum they had to put them somewhere.....
Not sure I would go out if I lived somewhere like you describe

I work in a primary school so you would be shocked at the type of phone some of these children have and the young age. Do they need one perhaps not, a good idea at 11 where they go into secondary school wanting to be independent.
