Sort of been discussed before but I was wondering will a ceramic coating offer me any advantages if I enjoy detailing and am happy to apply say an acrylic sealant e.g. Werkstat or similar 2 or 3 times a year ? and top us as necessary ?
Thinking about bodywork mainly as I would use GTechniq products on the wheels and glass.
You can still qd and top them, but if you like the physical act of polishing or waxing, no, they are not for you. They DO require some maintenance but nothing like a non coated car to a car enthusiast
I wouldn't use a ceramic coating as I like to tinker with other things - it gets me out playing more and find the whole detailing experience quite cathartic. I will one day move over to coatings when I just want that result a bit more permanently, but for now, no not for me.
If you have the time I'd say stick with what your doing. If your pressed for time and can only mange washs once a month I'd go with a coating.
I see a lot of videos of high end cars getting coatings, and I wonder what is the point. They will get little use, will never see the rain or a harsh winter.
if you've got a nice set of alloys then stick a coating on them I used G5 when I got my new 3SDM 0.05's and it just makes it that little bit easier, to keeps clean meaning you have more time to apply sealants or waxes to body work
I enjoy detailing as much as the next man but wheels get filthy and lets face it its not the most enjoyable job
c5 if preped correctly will have much greater durability on wheels than a wax or selant as wheels are subjected to heat from breaking forces, corrosive brake dust, and a whole host of other nastiest that comes from them being so close to the road in my opinion a coating is a no brainier, Gtechnique have done their research and have a superb product, durability is subjective as it deepens on how many miles you do, where the car is kept and on and on but Ive found a coating like c5 is the most durable
You could always go for a half-way house, and use something like Gyeon Cancoat or TAC Moonlight. That would give most of the benefits of a ceramic but the reduced life and ease of application would probably make you more willing to try something different after say 4-6 months if you wanted to.
Thanks for all replies, I’m off to see a local Detailer this week. I think I’ll get one of our cars done to save some time and effort but leave the other to indulge my OCD and therapeutic hobby
