The Xsara arrived today....

True to the guys word, it is as standard as he said it was, does still have the original rack and starts and drives etc.

Engine has history from new to 125k, which is a bonus. Original tape cassette headunit and CD changer in the boot. Even has the locking wheel nuts with two original keys....when did you last see that on a car 20yrs old?

The shell is rough though so breaking is the right thing to do. A few more surprises on that front later on....

Well, no more done on the 306 as I've had a flea in the ear from the wife about the Xsara....

Been busy though. Couple of nights through the week I've been at it and had the whole front end off, in prep for removing the engine. Today, after the gym and a cup of tea, I cracked on at about 11. By 3pm, all the front suspension, drive shafts, engine and gearbox were either off or out....

The loan of a decent engine crane from a mate helped lots. The gearbox separated easily (for those who know, you have to take the arm off the gearbox which means removing a spring and then a god awful pin that normally corrodes in and needs drilling out....pulled straight out this one!).

Bits sold so far include:
Engine
Gearbox
Brake calipers, front and rear
Airbox
Wheels
Cat
Power steering pipe

That lot alone has gotten me just over £700. Things left include a soft unlocked ECU (unplugged while the engine is running so it can be plugged into a new engine with no worries about the immobiliser), rear beam, front hubs, subframe, fuel tank, fuel pump etc. I'll cover all my costs, including the transport and basically get the rack free as per my plan. Result. Plus, the scrappers will collect the shell for free too. Happy days.

I've also kept pretty much every nut and bolt I've taken off it as a lot.of them are the same as the 306. Bought three big Tupperware lunch boxes and started stuffing everything in that! Useful spares!

Ben,

It is always a nice (and vanishingly rare) bonus when a car pays you more than it owes you!

Peter, thanks.

Yes, if you can pick up the right car at the right price, then it's worth doing. The GTi6 I broke last year I made nearly £1k on, and that was with me keeping the engine! I'll break even on this one, maybe make a little (as have £200 of cost from getting it transported to factor in also) but as said, I get a very rare steering rack for free!

They always say you make your money when you buy, not when you sell. You definitely bought well with that xsara, mate.

Well, there might yet be more....

I've already shared this with Cookies but the Xsara appears to be EXACTLY the same as the Rallye underneath, and I mean exactly, including the stiffener panels.......

So, twofold options here. I'm going to whack the VIN into service box and see what it throws up. If I can find a Citroen part number for the panel, I'll start searching by that as well. The other part is that the panels in this car are undamaged and pretty much rust free. Safe to say they are getting cut off before the car goes anywhere!

Worst case, I'll use the one I need and sell the other. Best case is, I'll find a brand new Citroen one, use that and sell both off this car.....

I reckon Craig would of already checked the Citroen network for you...

Apart from the obvious banter on the welding, what's also on the list at the moment?
