Wow what’s going on you will be joining the caravan club next, I used to have a caravan for a few years great when kids were young but, a lot of fafing about at times. Just use premier inn or similar know, camper vans it’s a minefield I’m afraid so difficult to judge value of them as well.
You will be quicker convincing her it’s not a good idea go away camping for the weekend that should do it

There seems to be a lot more places hiring them now judging by the number I've seen up here in the last couple of summers.
Don't know how long they keep them before they end up on the open market.

i like these things come under the 'great idea, bad in pratice' genre.

i cant think of anything cooler than crusing around scotland in my camper van complete with shower, air con and a fully equiped kitchen. unfortunatly the reality is alot worse! all the cons have been listed already.

i think you have to play this one wisely. u obvioulsy like ur cars and spend a few quid on them, slam the door on 'her' idea of a van and ur in for a 'mare.

id rent one for the weekend, still be the thick end of £500 this time of year, and give it a try. make sure you get stuck in traffic, want to visit somewhere a fair distance away from the site so you have to pack up etc.

then id say that £20k would get you alot of 5 star spa breaks - you should be one a winner.

if push come to shove i'd buy a old 4x4 - jeep or something - a £1500 van and give it a go. at least at that price when it goes wrong youve only lost a few grand

I've had a couple of lemonades tonight. I'll do the campervan thing and answer tomorrow.

I had a 6metre camper for 3 years, done loads of research before buying privately, not impressed with dealers in general.Had a good time but did become tiresome towards the end, nice size to live in but a bit big for small towns/villages.

Sold within 14 hours on Autotrader, now just get weekend deals from Groupon/Itison, proper bathroom/shower facilities en-suite, much prefer this if i'm honest.

20k buys a lot of weekends away, just buy an old mondeo diesel, mine has a tow bar or buy a tent, you will have to share the same showers and toilets with them anyway.

If you buy a vw at least you will have somewhere to sleep when it breaks down.

Personally look for any make other than vw, yes the vans are well finished and hold their money but 20k won’t get you much.

We have a tent. We will be camping at Carfest the coming weekend.

It's things like festivals and events she wants it. I'm happy camping.

Campervan I see as hassle as you can't just go out/leave site as easily. Each to their own though, we like to be out and about others prefer to pitch up and not move.

I know a camper company who rent out campers and motor homes, they take numerous bookings for people wanting to 'try' out the campers to see if they should go ahead and buy.

I'd certainly be looking to do that before spending all the dosh.

I always though the cheapest way, buy an old builders or contract van and do a simple conversion yourself.
