Do you think a 12v battery inspection torch can be used?

I cant see why not graham. If the Light source can be fitted and hooked up and its getting the power it needs then its going to work..

fitment is really important. And it just seems that for whatever reason these drills seem to be able to fit the bulb really well. the hardest thing was the messing around with the craft drill.. It took me about 6-7 attempts to really get the cut right to get the bulb in there... and I crunched up a fair few bulbs trying. so having a pack of cheapo bulb to use while you sort the fitment out is the one thing that I kind of learnt from doing this...

There was a massive thread a while back on this, with many [myself included] using £10 drills from B&Q.

that thread was prolly what I used as a guide of how to build this thing.. just used an old failing drill i had to hand rather than buying one.
