My BMW E60 535d Project

Hi All,

I am a long time lurker on DW and don't post that often, but enjoy reading all the project and restoration threads and admire the work that goes into them. So thought I would post my own little project.

After searching for a while I found a 2006 BMW 535d with 89000mile, on Gumtree on Christmas Day, the advert was brief and only a couple of pictures of the car, and after contacting the guy boxing day he seemed pretty straight. The car also didn't have service history. I know a big no no, but the price was keen so thought I would risk it. So on the 30th December set off on a 400mile round trip to Maryport, Cumbria.

The car isn't the prettiest, and does need some loving, but after a test drive, the car pulled well and cycled through the gears nicely. Went in with a low offer, and the guy come back with a price lower than I was willing to pay so the deal was done.

Even though the car doesn't have any history it does have a receipt for a recent gear box rebuild in June 2016. And after 200mile trip back the car ran faultless even returned a healthy 46.8mpg and affectionately named Ugly Helga.

Anyway enough waffling here are some pictures of the car the morning after I got it.

And the usual corrosion around the door mirrors

And the best looking alloy wheel on the car goes to the front drivers side.
.

So far haven't managed to get a lot done, but it has had a wash, snowed foam with Bilt Hamber auto foam, washed with born to be mild, a quick polish with black hole glaze and waxed collinite 476s. Also started removing all the vinyl wrap glue that was left on the interior. Think someone has had a vinyl wrap addiction at some point. Once the nights get longer and the days are warmer I will give the car a machine polish. These are the the photo so far.

Vinyl wrap glue on the steering wheel this was half way through cleaning it off, it was a pain to get off

and all finished
.

So things to be done:

Tyre's all round, had the fronts done yesterday as the side walls had chunks missing so replaced the cheap budget tyres with 2 Pirelli P zero nero's.

Rear pad's need replacing so while I am on will be doing the disc's too would have been done yesterday but was sent the wrong disc's.

Full service all filters and fluid's also will get my mechanic friend to give it an inspection to see what will need to be done if anything for the MOT in July.

Once all that's done, the wheels need a refurb, the front and back bumpers need a respray, and the leather needs a smart repair on a small split on the rear bolster, and once the weather is better the carpets will be wet vac'd and will do a full detail on the car.

I will try to keep this thread updated as I go.

Thanks for looking

Very nice, I keep flicking between these and the 3 series, there's something I just love about the E60 though, looks a right tough motor.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments always loved the e60 shape, and the engine just seems to have endless power but a remap will be on the cards at some point.

Pretty sure this will tidy up well. Looks like that was a well deserved clean the car needed.

Lovely looking car chap, I had an E60 530d, loved it. Like yours it had the vinyl peeling on the steering wheel, very common by all accounts.

Best car I've owned, my friend has it now! I have a 330d xDrive F30 now.

I really like these! Often looked at them but means id have to part ways with my current toy which I really don't want to do.

I recently found a 330D for a friend and it's an awesome vehicle. Can only begin to imagine what the 535 is like.
