Rs Escort on Maderia

Holidaying in Madeira at the moment and hired a car. Shocking 1.4 auto corsa.

Driving around the island as you do and in a back street village I see what I think is a escort XR3i. Pull over to have a closer look, as you do.

As I get closer thereís little black strips on the lights, then the big white elephant hits me, despite the Portuguese plates itís RHD! And itís an Rs. Cldnt believe it, has 58k on the clock too. No rust, fades front wing and a dented door.

Says to the wife have u a pen and Iíll leave a note saying do u want to sell and my number. No pen so went into the village police station opposite to borrow one.

Walks in and asks the gent behind the desk. Looks at me like Iíve just given him a turd for xmas. He shouts of his colleague and a girl comes round who speaks good English. Ask for a pen and paper and she gives me some so I start scribbling.

Sheís reading what Iím putting, prob to make sure itís not ransom note, and I notice so explain about the car parked opposite. She tells her pal whoís then all smiles and tells me, via her, that itís his friends! And heíll ring him. So he gets on the blower.

Says the cars not for sale and he brought it back from the UK after working there. I take his number and have texted him anyway, he asked what Iíd give for the car!

I lowballed him and said it will cost me Ä1000 to ship as no car ferry from here to Portugal. Waiting for him to get back to me!

Not sure about that - Madeira gets more than its fair share of rain and salt spray, but it's almost alway balmy.

There's quite an active car scene on the island to the extent that there is some kind of cars and coffee meet from time to time as well as the more formal concours-type events.

I've seen some beauties there in the past.

The series 1 RST were all white with the exception of a black one for Princess Di and the red Datapost cars from the BTCC.

There was also one that was sent back to the factory to be repainted in grey. Strictly speaking it was originally supplied in white though? It was in an old Fast Ford magazine many years ago.

yeah that's what I thought, I was getting confused with S1 and S2 with the latter being available in a wider range of colours.

on a side note - if we needed any more reason to love princess Di... imagine the conversation... "what private car would you like ma'am?, range rover?'...."ermm no thanks, i'll have an RS turbo please, but a special one in black just for me' hahaha
