How to tell if your brushes need replacing

The last time I used my argos DA, it stopped working. In the hour prior to it failing, it would randomly change speeds and wouldn't always start when I switched it on.

Some one suggested that the brushes might need replacing. Is there any tell tale signs when I look at the brushes that would indicate that? Would the description of what happened prior to failure co-incide with a likely brush problem?

Do I need a specific type of brush or are they generally universal?

Thanks.

I see they are not universal. Any one who had found some that fit, i'd appreciate a link

Yeah cheers. They look like number 50. I guess for £3 might just have to give it a try..
