Vauxhall Nova GSi - Rebuild & History Thread

*Long story, nostalgia content*

Well as most of you know I have a Nova Sport 1.3 which came from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire when it was new in 1985, went to Sheffield in 1987 then was sold to another Northern Irish student in Sheffield in 1992 who then took it home with him where it resided for 20 years. It had a few owners over the water including the most well known one, William Kilpatrick. I'm unsure how long he owned the Sport but he took great time and detail in restoring the car to his specification. This is where I step in, May 4th 2013!

I went across the water to NI with my mate to buy the Sport and we brought it home. I was very very pleased with it and has been a great wee car to me! My intention was to return some of the items back to original Sport spec which I managed with great difficulty and also to track down as much History as I could for the car. So I got in contact with the 1st owner who kindly sent me photos, bill of sale and other bits & pieces for the car. Then a few weeks later the 2nd owner got in touch with me who was a woman from Sheffield. She sent me pictures of the Sport and some bills & invoices etc to go along with the History I'd been collecting. But in the pictures, which I will show below, there is a red Nova GSi in the photos which she bought as a newer replacement to her much loved Nova Sport.

So me being me, asked if the GSi was for sale as I like to chase these old crap Novas for some reason and she said no, never! I said that was OK and asked if she ever ever ever sold the car to let me know as I'd snap it up. So I kept in contact with them to let them know of the Sport's progress and one thing and another but the GSi was rarely mentioned until her husband text me earlier in June 2014 to say his Wife was thinking of selling her Nova GSi. I couldn't get to Sheffield quick enough to see the car.

We spoke briefly on the phone about the GSi and also spoke about money and we both agreed on a price, pending me viewing the car. So I stayed at Mark's house in Newcastle on the Friday night and left smart on the Sat morning to head to Sheffield to see this Nova. I loved what I saw until... He opened the bonnet and I spotted it needed inner wings, battery tray and other wee bits of repair. But the car was so honest and totally 100% original. It's had some bodywork in the past, mechanical work etc but it's all correct and present and with being 1 mature lady owner from new with only 45k on the clock I knew I had to have it

We agreed a revised price due to the condition of under the bonnet and we were all pretty happy, apart from Jo who was sad to see her brand new Nova go away but at the same time she was happy to know it's gone to a good home and it will hopefully be restored to it's former glory

So, after all that - My Nova Sport and now Nova GSi which were stable mates in Sheffield in 1992 for a short period are now back residing at their new home. Together again after 22 years!

1992:

2014:

Then some of the GSi itself - I put on some new Nova mudflaps all round for these pics and gave it a quick clean to make it look a bit fresher:

I have put down a deposit on 2 new GM front inner wings with turrets. I collected a new GSi fuel tank off Mark for it as well then I need to source a Battery Tray, O/S Sill panel and maybe 2 new GM front wings as well then it's on with the restoration

She didn't replace the gsi withe a corsa vxr did she, because if she did we know what you will be buying in 22 years time.

It's nice to see the old cars reunited again. What's the inside of the gsi like ?

She hasn't replaced the GSi yet but she is looking to buy the new Vauxhall Adam S when it comes out.

Interior of the car is pretty tidy, with having only covered 45k from new it looks to have seen litte use. A slight bit of drivers bolster wear and a sun-died rear seat

They only sold the car due to their age, the amount of work needing doing to it and the length of time it would be away for restoration. I'm very happy that they gave me the chance to buy it and have her GSi and old Sport back together again!
