Discount dehumidifiers - advice

Having supplied dehumidifiers for over 10 years, and using 2 myself, a bit of hopefully useful advice for anyone in the market for a discounted dehumidifier, as they are currently being knocked down at various DIY sheds and on-line retailers.

Adsorption Dehumidifiers like the Meaco DD8L/Junior work by rotating a plate of desiccant crystals past a heating element which draws off the moisture.

Refrigerant or Compressor-based machines draw in air to condense on a cold plate where it is drawn off. It sub-zero temperature this plate freezes, rendering these machines totally ineffective in garages etc. It is this kind of machine that is typically sold in DIY stores and is NOT suitable for unheated garages.

Adsorption machines are more effective at low British temperatures in unheated spaces. Our dehumidifers are suitable for other applications like homes, holiday cottages, boats, caravans, cellars, sheds, storage units and garages.

Whilst the higher claimed performance figures for DIY shed machines may seem appealing, they will only draw this volume of water in almost tropical climates - above 25 degrees and very high relative humidity. In practice, the typically 8L/day rated Desiccant machines will pull this at even 5 degrees, massively outperforming even 20L/day compressor machines. This we learned in a practical test in the ballroom of a stately home where the 8L units had to be emptied daily, yet the 20L one only filled its (less than 8L) tank in 3 days.

I got myself a Meaco DD8L last year for my garage/workshop after doing loads of research on them, great bit of kit and with the drain tube you can switch it on and forget it. Another impressive feature is it will switch on automatically every half hour or so to check the humidity level and will turn off if OK so it's not running all the time, only when required.
