Autoglym HD Shampoo - As neutral as it claims?

Hi guys,

I've been using AG HD Shampoo and although it is a really amazing product I am not convinced by its claims that it doesn't strip wax.

Does anyone else find that it removes wax/sealant?

I find that it leaves the paintwork and glass super clean and silky smooth; like no other shampoo, but then water no longer beads.

I am currently using Poorboys BH glaze and 2 layers of Natty Blue paste wax..

Probably due to the surfactants in the shampoo remaining on the panels after rinsing. In concentrated form it is listed as pH 7.2 so very much doubt it is stripping wax

No one replied when I asked about it stopping water beading in the main autoglym section.

I used it on a car where I was trialling some new TAC systems sealants that I already know are strong beaders. After thoroughly rinsing hd wash the panel was hardly beading but was sheeting.

I'm not so sure it was removing or degrading the wax, maybe more leaving something behind that was interfering.

Hi there, UHD will not strip wax or sealant. It is pH neutral, there are no abrasives or any other ingredients that will remove a sealant or wax.

It is much more likely that the reduction in beading is due to some shampoo remaining on the vehicle. Some of the surfactants in the shampoo are designed to 'wet' the surface, which would counteract any beading effect. These need to be in there as otherwise it would be very difficult to wash a waxed car. They help the shampoo spread all over the car to ensure every area can be accessed by the cleaning elements in the shampoo.

If you are in a hard water area this issue is more apparent, as hard water does not rinse the shampoo away as readily as soft. Spend a bit longer on your rinsing and you should see your beading return.

Keen to hear how you get on

The shampoo is not designed to leave anything behind on surfaces (unlike our Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner for example), but some shampoo may be being left behind during the rinse phase, as detailed above.

There is a bit more info on the role different surfactants pay in shampoo on our blog here, as well as in several other threads here on DW.

Many thanks Yellow Dave and Autoglym....this is good to know.

The water here is a little hard but not to the point that it furs kettles, glad to hear its probably not stripping as I really like it
