2000 Lexus IS200

Hi all,

Last weekend, I was working on a classic Mercedes (posted here). When I initially went over to assess the car, the owner asked me if I could take a look at his wife's Lexus. My eyes lit up as I saw the state of it and immediately knew the improvements that could be made!

The car is a 2000 Lexus IS200, his wife has owned it from new and has only done 27,500 miles in it!! Whilst the interior has virtually no wear, the exterior told a very different story.

The solid black paint was looking positively grey! It felt really 'dry' to the touch - just placing your hand on the car left an outline. I presume the paint had oxidised? I've not really come across anything to this extent before.

The owner can no longer clean the car herself, so this is the reason for the state of neglect.

Some respray work was done on the rear quarter around 10 years ago by a reputable garage - however it was clearly not done very well as the majority of that panel has cracked paint which flakes off as you touch it! I realised that there was no way I could improve on that (short of torching the car!).

I started by thoroughly hoovering the interior out, then cleaned/treated the leather with Meguiars Gold Class Leather Cleaner/Conditioner. It was obvious how little use the car had seen.

Moving to the exterior -

I washed the car with ValetPro Poseidon using 2BM.

Wheels were cleaned with AG Clean Wheels (It was something I had lying around - I don't use alloy cleaners as none of the cars in my custody ever get dirty enough to warrant it!)

I then clayed the paintwork with a ValetPro blue clay bar - there wasn't actually that much removed by the clay bar.

Following this, I took some paint depth readings. The there was a fairly uniform 140-160 all over the car (weirdly - even on the poor repainted panel!). I settled on a combination of a Dodo Juice orange fin-cut pad and Meguairs Ultimate Compound - quite a harsh combination, but when you look at the pictures - you'll see why!

I also wet-sanded the headlights with 1200 grit wet & dry paper which had become hazed and yellow

The results were by far the most dramatic I've ever achieved. Enjoy!

Try this for a before and after

Can anyone spot where i polished up to

Thanks for looking

Looks fantastic, can't believe the mileage
Only the little bit of clear coat failure spoiling it!
Perfect apart from that

Really great turnaround. Nice job!
Can't believe the moss that was growing on the car and the state of the rear end.

I have said to them to let me know when they want to sell it. I'll be honest - I really like it.

I left it well alone! It's just crumbling away

They're going get a quote to get that bit re-painted. I really hope they do as it's a smashing car otherwise

Absolutely amazing transformation pal, top job! very good friend of mine has one of these with factory fitted kit and 18" Altezza wheels. It's a lovely thing and the 2.0 6 Pot is silky smooth.

What a turnaround! Amazing. One thing though, all that effort and no tyre shine..lol

Brilliant work though.

Fantastic work chum. Incredible improvement - the car really deserved to be cleaned properly, especially given its mileage.

Brilliant
