Had a friend go through the clearcoat on a Honda Civic bonnet using SRP a random orbital polisher using an orange Menzerna pad.
This was just on the crease though.
So it's by no means 100% risk free.

I will be careful around creases as usual, would imagine it was thin the clear cost to being with
