So that brings us pretty much up to date with the carbon project to where we are now and me not being able to resist a cheeky test-fit of the panels. On the whole, they're pretty good fitment wise although all providers of such panels that are intended for race use state there may be minor fitment issues!

I also noticed that carbon panels are a lot less flexible than the oem pieces so a little more patience is needed to get everything lined up. For example, the two pictures below show the position of the lower rear mounting point of the right side fairing before and after a tiny bit of pressure is applied:

Perfect!

I bolted the tail together with the Dzus fasteners and did the same with the nose and right side panel to see how it looked:

My next bit of research is going to be for the final finish of the panels. I may have these refinished in gloss but then have them wrapped in clear matte vinyl which would make them appear like the RS12 panels. I can then revert back to gloss at any time if I wished. If anyone has experience of this or know where there are any images of this being done with gloss carbon, I'd appreciate it!

Cheers

Matt

That is a stunner, have sat here with a brew and read through the whole thread. Gutted when you binned it, but really coming on well - personally I prefer the red

Reminds me of the lad who used to live next door, he got the 998 as it came out - having had the 996 (I think that's right) - was a beauty, he tweaked it a little, including a new exhaust system.

Rattled like it was going to fall to pieces when idling, but as soon as he blipped it, OMG lovely. He did give it the beans 1 day on the drive and it shook his old wooden Windows

Thanks for taking the time to read through! I really should go back and update the pictures!

I'd love to have a 998 - they're only going to go up in value now. It was the dry clutch that made them sound like a bag of bolts. Mine has a wet clutch so doesn't sound as rattly but it is loud on tickover! It measured 106.8db at Bedford on the static test!

I know what you mean about the red - it's the best colour for these but I can always revert back to oem at any time - one of my goals is not to do anything that's irreversible so each mod, such as the electrical panels starts with me buying a spare to hack about with!

Quick update!

I've commisioned the tail tidy to be made from 3mm aluminium and will hopefully be with me in a couple of weeks. I modified the design slightly to make it longer and angled up at the rear as suggested above. Here's a pic of the final template:

I've also secured a quote for the painting of the panels, well, refinishing - which is going to be matte. The quote also includes trimming the panels to allow use of the Abba stand and also to allow me to use the sidestand.

I'm currently watching a couple of things on ebay which I probably can't afford right now as I became a dad again on Tuesday! Let's pray the items don't get bid up too much! I won't share what they are right now incase it all goes wrong!

Cheers

Matt

Love the way you have put it back together after your small off.

Congratulations on the birth of your child.

Not quite! I already have both of those - I fitted them after the crash (stable door, horse. Bolted. Yes I know!). Guess again! It's build related but from Germany!

Minor update.

I've spoken to a company that can powder coat the tail tidy once complete (hopefully this week!) and have been collecting a few other pieces to be changed from silver to black at the same time.

The tail pad is made and in the post from Italy so again, hopefully with me this week! I was sent a sneak preview of it:
