Bloody Gritters!!!

On the way to work tonight I was faced with what could be every driver’s worst nightmare.

A gritter coming straight towards you with no way of avoiding it.

I tried flashing my lights to try and get the driver to stop spreading the grit but he just looked at me.

Therefore the inevitable happened.

My car got hit with thousands of bit of grit/salt, this is not a nice sound to hear.

So I pulled up at work, got out and found this,

The full drivers side of the car was covered in grit and salt.

After I had clocked in at work I went and bought two bottles of water and went out to rinse the car down.

I never noticed any damage on the car it was just annoyed that the driver seen me coming and seen that I had flashed my lights and he continued to keep spreading.

Oooh, thats a mess!! What were they spreading?! As it looks like its splattered onto the front of the car rather than being hard little salt crystals Had my car hit today as well by salt, but it was only little white specks that were left - makes an awful noise though...

Hope there is no underlying damage there.

To be fair here, they are doing an important job and I really don't think they're at liberty to pull in / stop spreading / avoid clean cars just because their owners have flashed them

That's messy and unlucky, sympathies for that, but there's more to life. I think your car would perhaps look a little worse if you slid off the same icy road the next morning

Appreciate you are not happy & hope no damage caused.

That said I can't begin to imagine the amount of abuse I would get at work if seen to do the water bottle thing.

I have physically driven off the road and onto the verge to avoid oncoming gritters on single carrageway roads.

Nightmare, a few years back i went to lift my old car from having a bonnet/front bumper respray - it was in the evening, i was 30 seconds from my house and met the gritter.. he completely covered me with grit and left the nice fresh paint chipped all over. I almost cried!

Me too!!! Once met one who obviously didn't want to stay out too long. He must have been spreading at 50+ mph - the salt was bouncing off the road and going over roof of my car. When I next washed it, the front, the O/S panels and roof were peppered with chips. Since then I do anything short of driving through the hedge to get out of the way.

If so many folks didn't drive like pillocks in frosty weather, most of the gritting wouldn't be necessary.

Coming off the M20 (usually dead this time of morning) got caught in a tail back caused by a gritter in the middle lane with what can only be described as a fountain of rocks pouring out the back.

Cars in front of me were understanbly nervous getting past it as the spray was literally gushing all three lanes - person in front of me went for it and I thought i would sneek in behind so he could take the brunt, he then obviously thought otherwise and almost slowed to crawl it was like hell on earth.

Got to garage to inspect want i knew would be the out come - the car looks like its been hit with a shot gun across the entire front bumper and splitter it's definately going to need a respray
