I know you did a full decon before you used it but it could have some of whatever protection it already had on it and it's interfered with the bonding, just a guess .

Just thinking on - if I use something like essence plus (this is simply protection, I'm not correcting paint) this should leave the base layer for Reload and cleanse together?

Use essence, not plus. The plus is for repairing the ceramic coat, although you can use it without it's not its primary function.
