Thumbs up My car of the day, new Mercedes E300e

Plug in or electrified vehicles are pretty much in full swing and this is Mercedes new E300e. This E300e has a four-cylinder petrol engine producing 208 BHP and a 121 BHP electric motor to give a combined total of 315 BHP and 700 NM of torque. 0-60 is less than six seconds with a top speed of 155 MPH. This vehicle does show how far electrification has come because it's possible that the E300e can cover 30 miles of pure electric running alone which is more than enough for those morning commutes. The E300e will only be available as a saloon so one can expect it be on the comfortable side and well refines. Inside the cabin you'll find a few clues to it's green credentials like an 'EQ blue' mood lighting and an electric mode button. The rest is typical Mercedes fair.

key specs:

price: £44,000
engine: 2.0 litre 4 cyl plus electric motor
power/torque: 315 BHP/700 NM
transmission: nine speed auto rear-wheel drive
0-60 in 5.7 seconds
top speed is 155 MPH

like it?

Lovely interior - Mercedes really is challenging Audi on that front and rapidly rolling out its hybrid - just goes to show how far ahead Toyota / Lexus were

Nice interior so much better looking than the current 5 series and Jaguar XF, Toyota Lexus may have started the ball rolling but other manufactures are now way ahead of them.

Company car tax dodger, and nothing extraordinary in the drivetrain - BMW claim 26-30 miles on electric only but the real world owners get 16-19miles. Really need to try a lot harder

E class is almost the only car anyone could ever need

And this is perhaps the biggest misconception of hybrids, the fact is that once pure electric power has been depleted you can switch to hybrid power and in normal driving the batteries get recharged through use of surplus engine power, regenerative braking etc so you can tap back into the battery power again

I remember some years ago I was doing some work in Madrid and had use of a Lexus GS450h - real world electric only range was 2 miles at best but on my daily journey of about 25 miles I was able to do about 9-10 miles on pure electric as the batteries were quickly replenished - with a hybrid its not a one use per journey of pure electric

I like it. The E class is comfortable, economical, fast and roomy. Everything you want from a saloon. Merc have really taken on Audi and produced an interior that is hard to beat in this price range. BMW need to up their game.
