Right then new car new thread more money to spend [emoji23]

I think those who know me may have guessed the car i replaced the frankly ruined polo with.... yep its a 106 [emoji23]

Before i get onto the new car id like to take a minute out to show the previous motors off

So where it all began, the 106 obsession started with this £150 ebay bargain when i was 12 years old, loved it to bits did a few jobs on it and sold it for a healthy profit to a nurse

A few cars later ( mk6 escort, rover metro and a saab 900s ) i picked up this little beauty, to me this car was the coolest thing going it was deafeningly loud low as anything and just soooo cool haha even though it had a shot release bearing

That car subsequently got swapped for this GTI with miss matched wheels no air filter no coilpack cover and a missing arch, still cool though and my favorite colour blaze yellow

A bit more swapping later and i got this mint condition low mileage quiksilver with a very chavy sunstrip lol

Sold that on for close to £1000 and was one of the best profits i made
Next i found this little 106 ski in a scrapyard for a couple hundred quid needing welding and a MOT which i did and sold it on

Was a little while then until i had my next 106 but this one was my biggest project and turned out rather nice in the end, deffinetly stood out haha

That got sold on and i bought this 1.1 gti replica with a badly dented door in many shades of blue haha

Which i then swapped plus a few hundred for this next GTI

The GTI donated all its engine and suspension for my favorite 106 nicknamed goldie which to this day i really miss

The next 106 was a runaround car i bought for when the polo broke down lol i still loved it even though the gear linkages kept popping off at the worst times [emoji23]

Next i bought this to make into a track car but never bothered [emoji23]

Again there was a big gap in between selling that one and buying the next one, this quiksilver was bought as a weekend toy while i had my focus, eventually got scrapped though

Next i got my mint low mileage GTI but i could never bond with this car because quite frankly i hate red cars they always look faded no matter how much you polish them haha, i was going to respray it but didnt want to spoil its originality so it got sold on

So 13 106s later we move onto the 14th which i shal update with momentarily [emoji23][emoji23]

So the new one, i picked up for £280 off a lovely old lady who let me have £10 off for fuel bless her haha its a 106 Extra time which was a limited edition made for 1 year, 1.1litres of pure power and very base model but very awesome, i picked it mainly for the colour and also for how extremely rot free it is, its amazing haha

The plans for this car i shal list at the end but for now it needed a very good clean so got on with it
Before

After

I spent most of my time on the interior though as there was 20 years worth of human slime and *** ash nestled in all the cracks and crevices

The steering wheel was the worst part literally coated in thick sludgy grime

After a couple testers

The whole wheel completed, took ages but its soooooooo much better

Next i focused on the horrid drivers seat, it was again thick with grime you couldnt even tell the pattern through the sludge

So started in small patches

And all done, still drying in the pictures so looks patchy

And lastly i scrubbed the door cards and gave it a thorough hoovering, for some reason the seats look dirty in the pictures but they look a lot better in person

Im sure youl agree its a million times better and it deffinetly smells a lot fresher now [emoji23][emoji23]

So plans for this weapon

I want to do my dream 106 build on this one so im going to take the best parts from previous projects and build an amazing handling fast 106 tailored to me so its perfect starting with a base model

I plan it to be VTR engined but turbo, fully polybushed with GTI suspention all round, GTI bodykit and spoiler, team dynamics pro race 1.2 alloys with hi spec 4 pot brakes and much more

Got a lot to do so wont be a fast project but its going to be worth it [emoji41] will update soon

Haha well im going to have to resist the urge to sell on this time [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] and so far im really surprised by the lack of rust on it so im going to have to do some rust preventing measures in the usual places to keep it away haha

This sounds like it will be a great project and one I'll follow with much interest.

Loving your appreciation of french hatches, the red and yellow ones are my personal favourites.
I don't suppose you spotted the stripped out track styled diablo red 106gti on ebay last year? It looked mint!

There seems to be a drastic disconnect between the long list of things you want to do to it...and how long you keep your cars (generally). We'll see who's right in 6 months time eh? ;-)

I thought you'd have liked having a new car with that Focus you had a while back - wasn't fast enough though?

#26 ·
Lets face it ill probably sell it 😂😂 but you never know lol one day i might keep one
And i did like having a new car but it was too nice to drive lke there was no noises no thrills just nice where as i like a car thats a bit more raw so i quickly got bored of it and didnt want to be stuck in finance on a car i didnt love so i sold it and paid off the finance :thumb:

#34 ·
Haha i do seem to keep coming back to them no matter what i buy 😂 They are great all round cars though and for a frenchy there super reliable :D admittedly in standard form there handling is a bit dodgy but a few mods and these give a lot of new cars a run for there money ;)

Nice to see you with another Jim. I'm exactly the same with these little cars, I'm 33 and had mk1/Mk2 Escorts, RS Turbos etc over the years but theres something about these little 106's and Saxo's that get under your skin.

Ive always had a perverted wish to build an early one in that mint green they came in. Done like a gti with the Alcantara in the leather seats replaced with the green check pattern the mint ones came with. Would look mega:thumb:

#35 ·
I know right ive owned a few "nice" cars now suck as a seat leon cupra R fiesta ST, corsa VXR etc but none of them really put a smile on my face like even a base model 106 can haha dont know what it is about them 😂

And ohhh those plans sound good!, would deffinetly be something a bit different :D

#39 ·
The focus i sold on to clear the finance as to be truthful as lovely as it was it was one of the most boring cars to drive that ive ever owned so didnt fancy paying so much every month for a boring car haha [emoji23]

Right i suppose i better update this haha its been a little while [emoji23] i do still own the little happy 106 and i really dont want to part with it but as always one of my bucket list cars came up for sale at a local car auction for a price i could not refuse so i did a purchase [emoji23][emoji23] i shall either start a new thread on that soon or carry on with this thread as the new car will still technically be a dream build lol

The pug was starting to look quite presentable really

But ive been focusing more on my mini (another thread i have to update [emoji23]) while the weathers been nice, which now has a new front end fully welded up

But i will update soon with the new car and the story on that [emoji4]

Right then guys sorry for leaving this so long but had a right old time with the last two cars/ sheds that i bought lol ill explain all now..

So basically i got rid of my lovely mint condition green 106 because i was at a car auction and spotted a Audi TT 225 bam going for £600 so thought i need a bit of that in my life lol [emoji23] here it was when i purchased it

Now the thing about me and german cars is... we really dont get on lol every german car i have owned just breaks within days of me owning it and doesnt stop breaking untill i sell it [emoji23] the audi was simply costing me a fortune to run and keep running so i sold it within a couple months looking like this

Lovely car, fast and refined but a bit boring and too expensive to run

So me being the genuis i am bought a bargain fabia VRS in black, well not so much as a bargain as a death trap as it turns out all of the subframe was loose and every bolt cross threaded so completely un driveable [emoji849]
So i had that for 3 days and sold it at a loss

Here was the subframe , as you can see theres a gap where the bolt goes in which should be flush [emoji849]

So where did that leave me? Well i had £500 to my name now for a car to get me to work be reliable and fun, now everytime this happens theres usually a cheeky frenchie just waiting for me in the for sale pages/ ebay, and this time was no exception as while scrolling through autotrader i spotted a diamond in the shape of a wicked red saxo VTR[emoji7]

10 months mot 120k miles and my exact budget [emoji56] i traveled to the center of birmingham to see this car and it was love at first sight haha i quickly told the chap to grab the logbook and i got my money ready and drove away happy as larry

This was when i first got it back home

After looking over the car it needs bits and bobs here and there but nothing too extreme but the main thing is it drives great purs like a kitten and the bodywork is nearly mint, result!

So i gave it a good wash and brush up inside and out and it looks great now i absolutely love this colour haha

As you can see its not done bad for its age haha

Now the plans are to make this car mint condition throughout and its going to be the basis for a turbo conversion once the rest of it is sorted with a few handling mods and brake upgrade :D so basically what i was going to do with the green 106 haha

Will update soon with some progress hopefully [emoji41]

Love that Saxo, but shame about the other two. How does somebody even strip the threads on something as robust as a subframe mounting??

Autotrader has by far the best app and user interface these days (take note Pistonheads Classifieds) and now that you can list cars under £1k for free it's become a great place to hunt for bargains like this one. Sold my MG ZR that way and you also seem to avoid the "what's your lowest price" idiots that you get on GumTree/eBay etc.

#43 ·
Haha thankyou and i really dont know how they managed it, it was also missing 2 steering rack bolts and a ball joint bolt so was a surprise it even drove to be honest haha

And autotrader has got a lot better these days ive sold a couple cars on there and i cant say ive had one time waster so far which is a result lol

Gutted about the TT but more so the fabia vrs. I have a want for one of those, not sure why though. It’s a shame how so many cars are bodged completely!
Well done on the Saxo VTR, I never liked these when my mates had them new back in the day but if I had to get a cheap car I’d definitely consider one. They seem like such good fun.

Well im not sure i made a thread on it on here but i did used to own a fabia vrs around a year ago, was insanely fast had a stage 2 hybrid turbo pd150 head bolts front mount intercooler egr delete etc etc, it was dyno'd at 220bhp and i think 380nm of torque so it was a riot but needed too much work so i sold it on haha, amazing cars though when tuned and still returning decent mpg!

Funnily enough the car i bought to replace it was familiar [emoji848]

Right then some progress from today

As normal procedure when i buy a new car with no cambelt history i decided to change the belt waterpump and tensioner

So top cover off

Found some quite bodgey looking welding which im going to have to re do [emoji849]

Bit more stripped

Looks like i got here just in time with this one haha

New water pump and tensioner on

New belt on

And rebuilt

Next i gave the engine bay a quick spruce up , nothing too in depth i just hate opening the bonnet to a tonne of dirt haha

So before

And after

Hopefully more soon if we get any decent weather haha
