The finer points

Hi guys,
My introduction post:-
http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=407099

I just wanted to clarify something, being new to forum. When is it ok to start saying you’re detailing a car, as opposed to just a valet?
Over the weekend I cleaned my Subaru; several stages from non touch wash, clay bar, paint restoration, polish and protect.
I use a mix of things I’ve picked up over the years, only operating by hand, no machines. My work is by no means perfect but it’s decent and for me, satisfying.
Before I make a *** of myself and start proclaiming I’m “detailing”, I just wanted to clarify the definitions and then hopefully start asking some meaningful questions.

Don't worry about it most on here aren't that sensitive.

There's been discussions on here before in relation to washing, valeting, detailing etc. and the "misuse" of the terms and you'll find different thoughts depending who you speak to.

Me personally for the amateurs it doesn't make a difference what you call it we are all like minded people on here. The professionals / companies are in a different league and even if I use the term detailing I still don't compare it to the detailing done by the pros.

For what it's worth and this is only my opinion but for me a valet is generally a quick wash and hoover with dressings etc. whereas detailing is the next level up i.e. paint correction etc.

As I say it's only a term don't stress it and feel free to ask away

Thanks Macca, I’m really hoping to improve what I currently do so I can actually sleep at night.

I've seen some work by guys I know in business and I feel appalled sometimes by the end results of my home brew jobs. Thanks for the encouragement though, I've stuck a post next to this one after my latest attempt at the weekend.

Yep - totally agree with what Macca has said above. The professional guys do the detailing, paint correction etc. I generally give my car a wash and a good clean, this in my mind is a long distance away from a detail, even if I polish and protect the wheel barrels, calipers and hubs.

Just crack on, ask loads of questions, and practice plenty!!!

Agreed, no need to get all hung up on technical definitions! By the sounds of it you're already a 'detailer' in your own mind, and that's really all that matters. If you're not doing it professionally and are just looking to take car of your own car to the best possible standard and are keen to keep learning then I can't see how anyone could be too sensitive about what you call yourself.

Yep agreed with what's already been said.

As far as I'm concerned I'm the best detailer down my road so I'm happy.

Have fun and crack on.
