Lightbulb My car of the day, new BMW Z4.

At long last the Z4 is ready to hit the showrooms and on looks and tech spec, it seems like a big step forward over it's aging predecessor. However this new Z4 is up against really strong competition with the Porsche 718 Boxster S, Alpine A110 and Audis TT roadster. So here we have the range topping M40i at £49,000 then the S-drive 30i at £40,690 followed by the S-drive 20i at £36,990. All models come with rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed gear-box. The base model gets a six-speed manual. The suspension set-up is mainly in aluminium and adaptive dampers are standard in the M40i. Also we have an electronic diff to aid traction to get you out of tight turns. Gone is the old cars folding metal roof and it's replaced with a lighter fabric lid. The M40i uses the same 3.0 litre straight six from the M20i witch helps the Z4 reach 0-60 4.6 seconds. With these types of cars, you'd expect them to be fairly light. Not in the case of the Z4. It weighs in at 1,535 KG .Looks are subjective and I feel its a missed opportunity with the Z4 but IMO it needs to be a little more exciting and that's where the Z4's rivals remain ahead of the game.

I think this car is going to drive very well and styling probably the only one half decent BMW has off their new designs IMHO

I didn't realise it was going to be a canvass top. I think a folding tin top like the last one would be best.

It looks pretty good. Maybe could do with another inch on the wheels and a brighter colour.

Rear end looks nice, side profile nice...front end..no. Interior is nice too. So overall it's a yes from me but would deffo be looking at the supra and others first before buying.

Overly fussy styling - what is BMWs obsession with fake ducts??

Digital instrument cluster is plain ugly too - why could they not have round dial faces instead of the stupid multi sided items

Many modern cars are becoming lighter than their predecessors - despite switching to a lighter fabric roof the Z4 still somehow manages to end up heavier than the previous model

Media reviews are not exactly overly positive either - what should be a focused sporting 2 seater ends up being a cruiser - what a wasted opportunity for BMW

I remember my face lift z4 of the original series. It was simple, uncluttered and in essence quite basic on equipment, but it was for putting the roof down and enjoying cruising in the summer. BMW seem to have lost the essence of what this car is about. The interior seems crammed with equipment and looks ugly. I remember the dials on mine looked like twin exhaust pipes, was fun and focused. Seems they are trying to make all cars all things to all people and failing....

I think that is a very handsome beast! And it looks very well appointed.

I really can’t decide on this ....back looks good in parts, front looks good in parts but I agree the fake ducts kind of spoil it and the dash is a no from me

I’d like to see it in the flesh... Not sure if I like going back to a fabric roof, I know it saves weight, but not sure...
