Car is now booked into Ecosse Powdercoating Services next Sunday.

They are going to media blast (in their cabinet) the metal parts behind the chrome trims to get them off, remove the TPMS AND dip/strip the wheels, fix any marks, chips or scuffs then powdercoat the wheels in a similar silver to they currently are/should be.

Winter tyres will then be fitted and 2 of the Dunlop summers scrapped (2 good ones kept).

They are confident they can get the trims off but also can remove them, cut away the bolt lugs and leave the wheels without chrome trims.

What do you think about removing the chrome strips (anyone good with photoshop can remove them?)

Pic of the wheels (not my image)

Personally I’d be keeping the 3rd spoke in, think they look nicer and that little different - whether I’d keep them chrome or change to a different colour, hmm that’s a decision...

Car is due to be dropped off first thing this morning to get the wheels blasted (to remove trims) then dipped/powder coated etc.

Will keep updated on how this attempt goes to get the wheel refurbished.

Winter tyres will also be going on at the same time

New (to me) Lexus GS450h

Car still not back and alloy wheel guys have stayed on until 21:30 tonight to try to get them done but they have hit, as I expected, all sorts of problems.

They are really going well above and beyond anything I would have expected, and much more than previous companies.

This morning they called to let me know that a few of the chrome trims (which bolt in) had previously just been snapped off and bonded to the wheel, as I suspected.

The technician went out to collect some liquid metal to recreate and bond the broken ones and get them sorted properly for me, at no extra charge.

Later on tonight they let me know that the wheels were very badly corroded under many layers of paint/powdercoat. They had previously been, I think it’s called, wet painted with the trims in position it seems and on top of powdercoat.

They were blasted multiple times after lots of work on them to remove the corrosion on the rusted trim bolts and on the wheels.

Through doing this they also discovered that every single trim had been bonded in and needed worked separately to get them off the wheel before they went into the acid. That’s 20 trims (and they are stupidly expensive so no chance of replacing them).

One of the TPMS valves was so badly corroded that it snapped too, so I will need to get a new one ordered up to fit and code later.

Will keep updated as due to pick the car up tomorrow night after work. They are staying open until 8pm to catch up on jobs and to make sure I have plenty of time to get out of work, home and get a lift to the place (it’s on a farm unit about 20 miles from the house).

Here’s some pics to show you the condition, after 40,000 miles with me and various bad refurbs in the past, fitters who have damaged the wheels in their twice annual tyre change etc.

Wow, they certainly seem to be doing a thorough job and really looking forward to the end results...
