Arrow Project E39- Gleammachine.

Well after a lot of miles over the last few days, I finally found my replacement work vehicle, a 2001 E39 525i SE Touring.

The objective was to find a mechanically sound, sub 100,000 mile car with original paint, a lot of the cars I viewed were either very tatty or had missing service history or a combination of both, so when I viewed this particular car I was pleasantly surprised as it had all main dealer stamps up to the recent 90K mileage.
Paintwork wise it is completely original other than a blow over on one of the passenger doors, it appears to have been done reasonably well though.

This will be an ongoing project and updated accordingly, but the aim is to use it from January and have the work and upgrades completed by the summer.
The main aim to begin with will be making the paintwork as presentable as possible and obviously a thorough clean from the outset.

Today I started with the engine bay, not sure it had seen a clean in many years.

Started with a good hoover, pollen filters removed.

Plenty of mud and grime had accumulated at the bottom of the windscreen, so the rubber covers were removed for access.

Engine bay washed and de-greased.

Finally dressed with a rubber and plastic protectant, areas that are subject to moisture were sprayed with WD40.

Whilst on the subject of the engine, during the long drive home from Southampton it became apparent that every time I came to a standstill there was a noticable burning oil smell coming in the cabin, obviously fearing the worst and after a bit of research on the internet, it appeared to be the issue of the rocker cover gasket leaking a little oil onto the manifold heat shield, had a little search under the bonnet my suspicions were confirmed.

A call the following morning to the independent dealership I bought the car from, the manager kindly offered to cover the bill for the replacement gasket and labour as part of the 3 month warranty, so booked in with my local BMW specialist at the beginning of January.

Will update further work and upgrades to the E39 as I go along, next jobs are to detail the interior and exterior.

Thanks for looking.
