Cherry Red 306 Rallye

For those old enough to remember or appreciate the hot hatch era, you'll know what this car is about!

So, I've a beach buggy with a whacking great 2.7 ltr flat 6 in it. Awesome fun in the summer and nothing else I want to drive. Come the late autumn/winter/spring, an open top buggy ain't much fun!!

So, after arguing with the wife and shutting her down (why do you need three cars??......why do you need 20 pairs of shoes and a bag to match??....I win) I eventually found, after 3 months of looking, a very good cherry red 306 Rallye. I'd had a GTi-6 a number of years back after owning a 309 Goodwood, and was properly impressed with it. Decided that the 306 is likely to go the same way as the 205 if you get a good one, so started looking.

Eventually found one, that wasn't strictly for sale but the owner might be tempted to mpart with it, via the 306 GTi/Rallye forum. A jaunt to south Wales and the deal was done.

So, the car. 109k, a known car on the forum, on its 3rd engine after engine 1 died from head gasket failure and engine 2 died from the owner continuing to run it for approx 5 miles with the oil light on........

Got replaced with a GTi-6 lump and the guy I got it from spent time removing the aircon stuff and reverting to the correct Rallye aux belt set up... The car is in great condition. Has had a paint on a couple of panels and the roof is a little pink but other than that, is in great condition. I bought it on the strength of the body. Mechanicals are pretty easy and cheap to fix, body work can be expensive...

A few pics from the day I went to look at it...

A lovely, almost std car. Only mods are its been lowered 40mm, has a stainless exhaust and an open cone filter in place of the airbox......plans are to return it to std spec as much as poss...

Thanks guys, yeah a rare beast these days. Only ever 500 made, 200 red, 200 white and 100 black. Less than 300 on the road now, not sure on the colour split but its taken me a long time to find one in the right colour and condition and one that's not been modded too much. The only other mod it has which I didn't mention is that it has the later phase 3 crystal headlights. They are much better both in terms of aesthetics and performance over the phase 2 lights so they are staying.

Few more bits I've done....

Centre console replacement from the carbon fibre nastyness back to the lovely std one...

Boot floor was next to get it. Was a right old state, scratched, scraped and dinged up. Not too much I can do about the dents for now as it requires access from underneath but the paint....

Got busy sanding, etch priming and wet flatting...

3 coats of Cherry red from a rattle can or two later and.....

Once that had hardened for a week, I got the Flex DA out to mplay and buffed it up a bit...

That's where I'm at at the moment....I've ideas of grandeur in terms of stripping the arches and underside and doing them all in Cherry red too. Making it properly mint etc....just got to figure out how to remove the ****ty horrible stone chip type paint that's on there at the mo.....
