I've never had issues with BH clay and water only. BH themselves say water only e.g.

I used the clay with a tiny bit of M&K Spa mixed with water and it worked like a charm. Water alone worked ok, but as others have said, it seemed to grab a bit more, which I found scary as it was my first time claying.

Bilt hamber say water only but on my black car, I did find some marring when I only used water. I was using the regular clay. A light polish will probably remove it, I had some meguiars Swirl-x which removed the marring when applied quite quickly by hand.

I was decontaminating it ready for a detail the following day but was just interested to see how bad the marring was.

I have since used a DA on my car again, and used the same BH regular clay. I felt I had still got the same level of decontamination when using a mixture of water and car body shampoo. it didnt seem to effect the clay bar in any way, although i did drop it on the floor at the end so it won't be getting used again!

I used BH clay bar with water and had marring too. I then used with a bucket of water with shampoo as I would for washing the car and the clay and it was better but I was always nervous that it would happen again (it didn't) but I am back to meguairs and clay lube.
