My new 2018 MK7.5 Golf GTI
Well after 15 years of running VW diesel's, I finally decided to scratch an itch and buy a GTI. I knew I'd take a bit hit on fuel consumption against the GTD, but to be honest for my 8k miles per year, it shouldn't have been too bad.

Was actually really quite sorry to see the GTD go as it really has been a brilliant car since i got it back in early 2016 and didn't miss a beat. The GTI has a lot to live up to.

Anyway, here's the GTD that was part ex'd for the GTI.

Onto the GTI which was picked up tea time last Thursday (3rd May). I'd asked the dealership to remove the external transport wrappings but leave all the internal ones in place and to not touch the car (i.e. don't prep), and true to their word, the car was delivered to me "dirty" much to their bewilderment.

I'd booked the Friday off to detail the car to my (albeit amateur) standards as listed below.

Started by Snow Foaming with AF snow foam, and whilst it was dwelling, went around the more intricate parts with a soft detailing brush. Rinsed off after about 10 minutes with the power washer set to medium pressure.

Then sprayed the car and wheels with Iron-X fall out remover, which showed a fair bit of bonded contaminant. Rinsed again at medium pressure. Coated car with AutoSmart Tardis to remove any tar spots and transportation sheet adhesive.Rinsed again medium pressure.

Next step wasn't officially required but clayed the car using Bilt Hamber mild clay (using last touch as lubricant), which as suspected didn't bring off loads but there were some bits it got. Car was washed car – 2 bucket method using new lambswool wash mit. Rinsed – medium pressure, then car dried with my new Gyeon drying towel and Metro sidekick blaster.

Then inspected paintwork (use LED light), for swirls, cobwebbing, scratches etc. and to be honest it was pretty good with very minimal marks. Prepped paintwork with Dodojuice LimePrime on a polishing pad, which got rid of all the marks then wiped down with panel wipe. Sealed car with 2 coats of Getechniq C2V3 using hand applicator, and polished off using new microfibers. Then went over the C2V3 with two layers of Dodojuice Purple haze using foam applicator pad.

Removed Wheels. Sprayed with Iron-X fall out remover and AutoSmart Tardis to remove any contamination. Cleaned with Lime Prime on a hand foam applicator (special attention to gloss black spoke areas and inner barrel of wheel. Wheels then sealed with 2 coats of C2V3 including brake caliper's. Tyres dressed with CarPro PERL diluted 1:2. Whilst wheels were off, coated inner wheel arch liners with CarPro PERL and metal suspension parts with barebones. Used some P21 wax to brake disc backing plates and rear suspension wishbones (all I had to hand), then re-fitted wheels.

Dressed all black trim with CarPro PERL diluted 1:2. Cleaned glass with AutoGlym Fastglass inside and out and polish with dedicated glass cloths. Wiped over interior with damp microfiber and fully hoover. Dressed engine bay with CarPro PERL diluted 1:2

All of the above took me around 9 hours continuous, and I was absolutely knackered at the end :D

Anyway onto the photos. Now I didn't take any on the day (as I was too tired), so these were show on the Saturday and I had driven it a little (so there might be a few bugs and a bit of dust etc), but you get the idea.

As you can see, I like metallic grey cars :D:D


Showing the optional "Art Velours" interior (half leather half alcantera), and the standard equipment fit 8" Sat Nav system and the full digital "Active Info Display" instrument screen.

Already started with a few cosmetic mods as shown below.

1. Engine lower cover (the part between the main engine cover and the radiator trim (deleted by VW a few years ago as part of cost cutting)

2. Aluminium foot rest (we only get a cheap black plastic unit in the UK unlike LHD cars)

3. New GTI logo'd mats and Lockwood international stainless steel sill trims.

4. Rear trim kick plate (the part with the red line though it) to match the kick plate at the front of the car.

5. Chromed speaker ring for the rear door tweeter to match the chromed standard Dynaudio sound system ones up front.

6. Front seat under side stowage drawers. These were deleted from UK spec late 2017 by VW as part of cost cutting, but having had them on my previous car I found them really useful. Got a pair of brand new unmarked ones from a salvage car for 45 for the pair. So far my most satisfying mod.

That's about it so far. Still have a few fits to fit and some VCDS coding and will add these to the thread once done.

Thanks all. It's called Indium Grey Metallic.

Just hope the current shell shock over the MPG difference wears off soon :lol:

Lovely - we went GTD to GTI this time as well - fuel does get better but nowhere near GTD ! -

@Whizzer, it was a little bit of a tongue in cheek comment by me as no one buys a GTI expecting to get GTD economy, but was a little shocked on my first drive to work this morning where my GTD used to get a fairly consistent 45-48 mpg for the journey, whereas the GTI only got 32.5 mpg driving it really easily. But to be fair the car does only have 65 miles on it at the moment, so it should improve slightly as the miles increase. For a similar journey I'd be delighted with around 35-36 mpg (if possible) ?

@Peter D, yes the seats were a big treat to myself. Loved the new full leather look of the MK7.5 cars with it's perforated leather but at nearly 2k it just wasn't even an option for me. Also, having had a VW with leather in the past, I found the usual hot in summer cold in winter etc. I think the art velours (at around 800) strikes a nice balance of soft and supple alcantera where your body touches (so inner seat squab and backrest) and leather (or pleather) everywhere else including the seat sides and bolsters, backs, armrests (centre and in door cards) and door cards themselves.
