Simple, copy (don't move) your songs folder to the external drive.
Go into iTunes' Prefs and Advanced, select Change and point iTunes to the new location.
Save that, quit iTunes, then relaunch....

It was/is overkill for the household duties, but now with the PW being connected, you should be okay to run it whilst someone is taking a shower.
