Smile BMW 520d (Sophisto Grey) Summer Detail

It's been a little over a year since I picked up my 'poverty spec' BMW 520d M Sport, and courtesy of Covid closing schools and forcing me to work and run my tutoring business remotely, it's been a quiet year for the car, doing just 18k miles. As such, it was still looking pretty tidy sitting on the driveway of our new home, just a little dusty:

However, having spent much of the past weeks sorting out new house, ripping up floors, ripping out kitchen etc - I decided to spend a few chilled afternoons pottering with the BMW.

I'm an 'old school' detailer - so a basic wash, de tar and clay to prep and then I went for rotary polisher with Menzerna 2200 on a white Hex pad followed by Menzerna 3800 on a 3M blue pad. I didn't do the whole car in a day, just a couple of panels an afternoon and the car was being used in between as well, so just washed down what I planned to work on that day. Machine polishing should never be rushed, so to avoid rushing I just pottered away in my own time.

Happy with how the finish was coming up, used the sun for the 'direct light' shots:

As I worked, I protected the panels with Zaino Z2 - like revisiting an old friend, and it was a joy to work with and left a beautifully slick finish, maintaining the machine quality flake pop, and arguable slightly enhancing the 'wettness' just slightly. A few pics following a single layer of Z2...

Over a couple of days, three further layers of Z2 protection added once the machine polishing was complete, exhuast tips polished with Autosol, wheels simply cleaned and tyres with Autoglym Tyre Gloss. Deciding I don't really like the whole 'all black grille' thing most BMW fans seem to love, I've gone the other way and replaced my black M Sport grilles with the chome SE ones - I think it looks better on the darker colours, but each to their own there.

Happy with how its come up...

Next up is the 140k mile 2015 Outback which, during house move has doubles up as a removal van - amazing what you can squeeze in an Outback, but it's deserving some TLC now

Looking nice

Agree with the kidney grills, left mine in the chrome surround and much preferred it...

Very nice Dave, same colour as mine. I recently did mine too, following some paint work at the front end, I decided to do the entire car and re-coat it.
When the sun shines, it’s a great colour, there is a nice warmth to it during the “golden hour”
