I have used the hacksaw blade trick in the past, it works pretty well. I recall Vauxhall Zafira's to be the worst.

a blade of a glass scraper is good.

to remove sand you can use a rubber mallet to beat the carpet, sand rises to the top of the pile just hoover it up, in the harder to reach areas i use a fine wire brush.
dog hairs i use a dog hair brush but mostly you just have to be patient and persevere, but my personal favorite for interiors is the tornador and a big compressor

This is my least favorite job,as already said its normaly cars like fiestas/corsas and french cars,you can bring them up good but takes a lot longer than carpets from bmws/mercs ect
Ive found working a small area (maybe 4" square) at a time works well, try and get close and you can see its slowly getting better,also spraying with water or a mild apc works aswell
