Paint Detective PD8 problem

I’ve had a Paint Detective PD8 for longer than I can remember and it has been brilliant until last weekend.
Switched it on and checked the calibration then took 5 readings on the vehicle with no issues.
Went to take the next reading and while moving the unit bleeped and showed a measurement even though it was a good 6-8” clear of the bodywork, when placed on the bodywork got nothing but when lifted clear same beep and a random measurement.
Thinking the batteries were the issue I changed them but the unit is still behaving the same way.
I’ve tried cycling the power on and off a few times but the unit is still giving random readings when not in contact with the vehicle and doesn’t respond when held against either the vehicle or the test plates (both steel and aluminium)

Anyone had this issue before and was there a way to fix it or do I have a paperweight?
