Talking More Silverware for School Race Car Project!

Some may remember I posted a while ago about a school racing project I am running in my school where pupils build an electric car and compete against other teams from all over the country and beyond - Greenpower Formula 24. Last season the car was built and won the Spirit of Greenpower award on its first outing at our local heat in East Fortune...

Over the winter, a new team of pupils for the 2017 season worked on the car, addressing some issues with tracking that were evident and have done some performance analysis of motor gearing vs. battery draw to optimise the car's performance a little. The work so far has paid off:

At the East Fortune 2017 heat, the team won three trophies! One for Best Presented Team, one for a podium finish (3rd) in the second heat, and one for the Kit Car Winner, the best performing kit chassis on the day! Pretty pleased with that! But the best bit for the team is that they came third overall in the qualifier and have earned themselves a place on the 75-car grid at the season final at Rockingham in October! This is an international final for teams from all over the UK and beyond, so we're pretty physched!

Still have work to do on the car - buying new motor gears for adjusting gearing. Performance tests by the kids have revealed they want to gear the motor up and step the wheel size down from 20" to 16" to save weight, the 3mm ply panelling will be replaced with 1.5mm alu with select panels being carbon fibre, and we have a nacca duct for the under-tray to get some air up to cool the motor. We'll next be racing at Alford in June in another qualifying heat to trial some of the car changes and get ready for the big weekend at Rockingham!

Video about last year's final:

Dave, have you or the kids looked into higher-performance wheels and tyres from recumbent bikes? I reckon there are aero and rolling resistance gains to be had there, compared to what seems to be on it at the moment.

Well done all round, by the way!
