Yeah so many things could cause the same issue. It’s good when you get it sorted though.

4 months on from the last post I decided some maintenance was required. I had a timing belt kit and new water pump fitted. It’s nice to have peace of mind that this was done.
The following month I had some other issues sorted out and the car went to my local Jap specialist. When the car had been used for some ‘spirited’ driving the engine would smell for a while afterwards it was a burning oil smell but I couldn’t see anything obvious. Noise from the brakes intermittently as well and when at idle for a while there would be an exhaust smell coming in the car.
The oil was leaking from the rocker covers and dripping onto the exhaust. I had several gaskets and bolt seals replaced to sort the oil leak and also brand new DBA T2 Street series front discs and Hawk ceramic brake pads. The exhaust smell was a leak from the catalytic converter on the up pipe. I had a JDM decat up pipe put in but was advised the check engine light may come on. After fitting the up pipe I was advised the diagnostics show both lambda sensors were not working and also the check engine light wasn’t working either. That explained why I didn’t have a check engine light on for the MAF sensor fault! These issues would be sorted later but for now it was money well spent, I could now play around in the car with no nasty smells and the brakes were spot on. The next 8 months the only money I spent on the car was an oil change I did myself at home. I fitted a resister in the connector for the exhaust temp sensor so I could remove the sensor that would have gone in the old up pipe.
Now we are at July 2020. The car went back to the specialist to investigate the reason the check engine light was not working and to replace the lambda sensors. While it was there I had the gearbox and diff oil changed as well. The reason the check engine light was not working was because someone had cut the wire going to the cluster. It had to be re soldered to get it working correctly! Someone obviously was struggling with ‘Subaru life’ and took the easy road! 2 second hand genuine Subaru sensors fitted and I was good to go.
It was at this point I started thinking about getting the car fully resprayed. I had done so much to the car and intended on keeping her forever and wanted to make the car something special. I decided before I was going to commit that I would get a full rust report done on the underside of the car. I had this done and although there was a fair bit of corrosion nothing was structural and everything that had corrosion could be replaced. I could’ve got this work done before the respray but decided to go for the fun job first and then wait to sort the underside out.
I now had a list of parts that needed to be replaced so I hunted Facebook breakers and eBay etc to get parts as they came up for a reasonable price to store until the time came to get them all fitted. What colour to go for was my next dilemma! I had toyed with the idea of House of Kolor Pavo purple and then BMW Sakhir orange. I kept looking at videos of both and could not decide. I’d always liked red cars but couldn’t decide on what red I liked. I started visiting body shops and chatting with painters and getting a few quotes for resprays in the same colour and a full colour change. One of the painters suggested Mazda soul Red Crystal was one of the nicest reds that you could get. I thought I’d seen a post on here about the colour so I searched on the old threads and another member had asked about the best OEM red and lots of you guys suggested that exact colour as a great choice. I started researching it and there was Soul a red metallic (pre 2018) and Soul Red Crystal (post 2018). I decided that I was going to go for Soul Red Crystal. I got a quote I was happy with and placed my deposit and got the car booked in for the colour change respray. Exciting times!
