Gtechniq Gtechniq was founded by quantum physicist Drew Gill in 2001, out of a total dissatisfaction with the performance of paint protection products at the time. Everything from waxes, to new-fangled polymers and PTFE based miracle treatments, nothing on the market offered any meaningful durability, either in looks, or protection. Worse still, he found that most of the products actually performed poorer than the paints they were supposed to protect. From this discontent came a simple idea, ‘To engineer the world’s most beautiful, perfectly finished, smartest and most intelligent surfaces. Surfaces that do much more than simply look great when new.’

CSL & EXOV4 stubborn road film

Hi!

Sorry for a noob question, but I’ve been detailing and waxing my cars for decades but new to ceramic coatings and would need som advice.

We have pretty harsh winter conditions with NaCl and also potassium and calcium salts on the road. I have applied CSL & EXOV4 2 years ago to my daily with great results. I do mostly contactless washes with Bilt Hamber autofoam and pressure wash, and occasionally a G-Wash contact wash to remove the road film. However, beading at the sides of the car is now, after the 2nd winter, clearly diminshed and there is a stubborn, sandpaperish road film that a contact wash didn’t remove. Previously, when using conventional waxes, I would have just clayed, polished and waxed, but now with CSL, what would be the proper way to proceed? W6?

Not yet, thanks, I’ll try that. I’ve run out of W6 but ordered some more. I guess W5 can also be used on paint?

Interesting, how long is the quoted durability of your ceramics? Could it just not be failing?

That could be the case here, considering the harsh conditions. With conventional waxes I’d just clay, polish and reapply. The shine is still fine but beading is failing and the surface definitely feels grainy. I’ll try the W5 and W6 route first.

You might want to consider a decon shampoo after. Something like Garage Therapys Decon wash or the new Gyeon Restart wash. Also something like Koch Chemie FSe as a mild limescale remover.

Maybe even the Labocosmetica Purifica and Primus combo.

Try tar remover as I suppose studded tires are used at your area. Embedded asphalt and tar particles feel like sandpaper when touched.

The EXO has probably completely gone as it lasts up to 18 months although I find that it lasts less than this. EXO is what gives the beading effect whereas CSL is a sheeter so there's probably just CSL left on the paint. You could apply a coat of EXO (if you done this yourself originally) or a decent silica spray sealant for a better water effect.

As mentioned in a previous post, definitely do a decontamination and use tar remover too. Only after these stages should apply a topper product.

Thank you all for advices! I received W5 and W6 today and I’ll try using them during the weekend and report.

I did apply the CSL and EXO myself, after proper paint correction, IPA and panel wipe. I did all my three cars at the same time and two of them, leading more or less a life of luxury, are fine. This poor beater takes all the salt baths during winter.

Love the wet look it still has, even in the grainy areas between the wheels
Photos in forgiving light conditions, BH prewash, GWash contact, no detailing spray.
