It is disgusting and so frustrating and is another reason I am so happy to have a dashcam to give me the excuse to say "sorry pal, got you on camera"

Supermarkets and Councils are partially to blame as they re-size the bays to increase the number of parking spaces. This doesn't excuse the stupidity of some vehicle owners and I've seen car doors literally thrown open by drivers and children without a second thought. I always use the Parent & Child spaces which are the correct size for cars, and I care more about my doors than what other people think.

This happened to me last year, see here:

https://www.detailingworld.co.uk/for...d.php?t=421645

I've had it happen in the past lots of times which is why I started being mega careful and had a parking mode dashcam installed. When I reviewed the footage I couldn't find anything though, so just left it.

However around april I decided to go over the footage again and worked out the car that caused it. However in the end I decided against informing the insurance as I figured I would probably get screwed over with increased premiums and despite having solid evidence I reckon they would probably weasle out of it because it had been so long ago.
Really annoyed I didn't check the footage more thoughly at the time, and I am still ****ed as the car is low mileage with all original panels.

I had the dent fixed with PDR, so I am now left with a small chip which I hope to make "good enough"

Your chip sounds much bigger so I think you may have to consider a SMART repair (PDR + touch up would probably still be visible on a grey car)

Thanks for all the support!

I got in touch with my local BMW as the third party body shop they use has done some warranty work for me in the past that I was impressed with

Having spoken to them on the phone he said that BMW put a 3mm tolerance on their filler depth as a standard. He said the point at which its struck is the worst spot so in order to get me a perfect fix he is suggesting a complete new door (they’ve yet to see it in person as I’m away currently, so everything is based on my countless photos).

They could pull it out and repair but it wouldn’t be ‘as new’ which is what I’m aiming for ideally with it only being a month old.

I’ve also spoken to the car owner who said that there was a mark on the edge of his door that looks like it lines up with the dent on mine for the photo of our cars together...

I’m crossing my fingers we can get something worked out but we’re not out of the woods yet

Does the car park have CCTV. you could always ask for it to be reviewed.

It might or might not work, here's my story:

I parked my car in a council owned car park a few years ago, the parking spaces were quite tight but my car was a SEAT Leon so not wider than the average car. When I returned I noticed that the rear bumper/wheel arch was scuffed badly and paint removed all the way down to the plastic.
Definitely happened in that car park so I email the council that is responsible for the car park and requested to view camera footage on that particular day for the specific hours I was parked there, still have the email response from the council: "Unfortunately, we are not able to show you any footage. This would need to go through the police who, if they felt they needed to, would come in and check the footage. I apologise for any inconvenience caused."

That's awful mate. You might want to invest in a Dash Cam that has parking mode.

If there was any way of showing paint transfer on the other vehicle I think you’d have a shout at persuading them to stump up the money. I’d hunt them down to the business address.
