Kartman's '90 Golf mk2 Driver more door

So i thought it was about time to get a build thread going for this. It was destined for the scrappy with its only fault being a faulty clutch, the bodywork is very very solid! At this point my mate stepped in to save it. It sat at his work and then at his for ages and no progress was really made, he had his Montana green GTD and various other cars and never got round to getting this going. Thats where I step in and very little persuasion and it was mine I needed another project as my mini was nearing completion. Here are a few pics he sent me before I got it. It came with a replacement good condition tornado red door as the drivers front had some surface bubbling.

It was storing various things!

He had starting polishing up the side he could easily get to and was coming up rather well.

Chopper not included unfortunately

A mere 195k

Tornado pink in full effect on the other side, I can't wait to get me DA out

Very tidy interior and free meerkat

Some dismantling had started

Once emptied and one side polished look rather good although has slightly faded again since with no protection on it

Plenty more to come

So I was busy finishing my mini shortly after acquiring this so I initially set about mainly gathering parts. Old period correct 300mm mountney that came with my mini.

Haynes

And important things first so the new (to me) wheels. Compomotive th mono 1581

And my first delivery from VW Heritage.

This included a new front lower panel which I promptly started to get primed and into the right colour.

Cleaned up a rear driver badge I got from the scrappy

While the mini was off being sprayed I got some bits done on the golf. Grill lower trim filled and painted and black badge. Spots will be changed for new not cloudy and cracked ones.

Stole a retro headunit and CD changer from the old mans lotus as its period correct I think.

The comps cleaned up very well

I stripped, cleaned, heat gunned and coated the small bumpers. Came up very good.

Mini and golf parts store has plenty in it at this point!

Golf progress was then halted as I had this to put back together

The minis return did not slow down parts purchasing though so stuff was gradually arriving.
Coilovers

16v rears

Nice delivery from Heko

Found the front driver badge in the car broken, glued it up and got it attached

At this point it was crunch time for the mini. Got it all built up and ready just before London to Brighton mini run, sailed threw the MOT and pulled 90bhp on the rollers before a distributor problem detonated a piston. While I sulked and set about sourcing engine parts for that I got stuck into the golf and pulled bits off it to be cleaned up at home. Evicting this guy in the process

So recently I panicked realising I wanted the mk2 on the road sooner rather than later and with the mini still in bits I went and ripped its face off.

That left this mess

Plenty to clean up, paint, and/or replace so the daily was loaded up

All the bits taken home and after a quick pressure washing looked a bit better

Had a nice delivery from vw spares and some tyres for the daily!

During the week I painted plenty of the bits including the front panel satin black which dried much less shiny than it looks here

I did a buy

Next job was cambelt and tensioner

Most bits stripped ready to be cleaned and painted

Next day after a few hours. The painting has tidied it up no end

This car is remarkably solid! Only hole I have found other than one under battery is one in the front corner of the drivers wing. So I pulled the wing off and removed the arch to make sure there were no hidden surprises. This is all I was greeted with.

Nothing too scary, now all welded up

Red oxide is not a bad colour match lol, need to add a bit of texture to front corner then can paint the top coat.

Painted a few more things

Then last weekend I set about putting the engine all back together with all new service bits and it finished off like this

Missing a few mounting bolts and random bits so day off Friday and will pop to scrappy and hopefully get her running
Assembled a few bits too, crosshairs in and bumper irons back together

So we are now up to date. More exciting stuff coming soon
