309 GTI Project

Some of you may have seen my current main project which is my 1989 205 GTI 1.9, with that project nearing completion (sort of..)

I got set on looking for the next project, having been friends with Matt (Willsy) for a while now, I’ve always drooled over his 309, they’ve always caught my eye after getting into my 205s.

The main issue with finding it a 3 door 309, is exactly that... finding one!! They are indeed like hens teeth, I have been searching for months, debated a few 5 doors that popped up, but came to my senses.

Around a month ago whilst on paternity leave with my newborn, a nice looking 3 door popped up, low owners, low miles and looked presentable. Of course, it was a million miles away.. Manchester. (I’m on the south coast).

Knowing how rare they are, and a few missed opportunities under my belt, i got as many pictures/videos from the owner that I could, we agreed and price and I essentially bought it blind and sent my recovery guy straight up to collect it!

Recovery day came and I was slightly anxious, although it has been used daily, has MOT and a fair amount of service history, I was still worried it could be a ****ter! Having worked on old French cars for a while now I knew it would need work, they all do!

It arrived exactly as expected! Needs some paint, needs some welding, and needs some mechanical work!

First of the jobs was to ditch the silly aftermarket horn and kill switch, both shortcuts as the air horn had stopped working and I suspect the kill switch was fitted due to a battery drain fault.

I’ll look into both above faults at a later date, next was to replace the boot struts which had lost all their oil, meaning they no longer held the boot.

Next was to sort the airbox mounting, it was making a horrible vibrating noise! Replaced the air filter whilst I was there.

Replaced the worn out and incorrect battery with a new Bosch correct 063 battery. Also replaced the battery clamp for a new genuine part.

Plenty of nice little jobs to do on this, I’ll continue to update as I go, this is very much a back burner and ‘make usable’ project whilst I finish my 205!

Love this.........my generation of car and really excited to see another French project car...

It may be my computer, but your images are running in sets of three across the screen instead of vertically? Makes for quite a difficult read/comparison......however could well be my browser so if no one else notices it, just ignore this!!!!

Best of luck and looking forward to the upcoming installments

Arguably the greatest of all hot hatches, certainly was for that era.
Lovely car.

Looking forward to this thread unfolding! Having the same issue as above though with the images being in a row. Makes for a difficult read/view

Oh that look nice. Look forward to updates from you. If it comes out anywhere as good as the 205 it will be outstanding.

Totally this. There was a lovely XSi in Ballinamallard, then a neighbour bought his wife and his brother two identical 309 3dr GTis.

I've loved them ever since I saw those. Just gorgeous.

Thanks for sharing

Great find... my first car was a 309 GTI (look a like)

I loved it... and always preferred them over the dime a dozen 205s that were about...

Looking forward to the updates on this one too...
