Broadband speed slow in evening?

During the day my speed is generally about 3.5-4 mbps but from about this time in the evening I only get about 1 mbps, and later on half that or even less sometimes!

I'm using this to check it :-

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

Is this considered normal and just to be expected or am I justified in contacting my ISP to make a complaint? (TalkTalk btw.)

Cheers.

Is it an LLU product or BT's adslmax sold on by talktalk. If its the latter then it will be similar to Skys connect product which is traffic managed in the evening.
Have a look here for more info

Thanks, I'll have a read at that link

What's an LLU? (should have probably mentioned I need things in layman's terms when it comes to this stuff )

I'm guessing it is the latter, and so it's probably being traffic managed to one degree or another.

the majority of isp's have a policy where they throttle the bandwidth at busy times. essentially they cut your speed and give it to another user to save the server load.

talktalk are the worst for it. cos theirs is free with the phone line its connected at 8mb and dl speed is capped at 512kbps

I'm hearing a lot of good things about O2 at the moment, but we have the phone package in with the TalkTalk which is something I'd want again if I were to think about changing.

o2 is very good

use the thinkbroadband speed tester - it's much more accurate.

phoning them up is worth a try, but slow speeds like that may be more to do with your exchange than them so they won't have much control over it
