Detail My Ride | 1998 Bentley Mulliner R only 1/100! | Light Correction Detail

Want to see daily photo updates, including photos, offers and giveaways? Check out our social media to see the latest from us!

Hi Guys!

Firstly, an apology for the limited amount of write ups get added to a never ending list of things to do as our diary becomes increasingly busy! However i'll try to keep bringing as many write ups as possible to you guys, and to make them as detailed as possible!

Over the past few weeks we've been incredibly busy, however we found some time to launch our new website which has been under construction for a number of months now. We've streamlined our services, and improved exposure of others as well as given our website a fresh new look, with updated images of cars etc. We also have some further changes coming in the summer, watch this space!

You can check it out at www.detailmyride.co.uk to see whats new!

Now, onto this write up! I received a phone call from the client who explained the car, a little about its history etc and within a few hours i'd visited the clients home to view the car, and discuss what we could offer.

The car is a 1998 Bentley Brooklands Mulliner R, 1 of 100 originally supplied by Jack Barclay in London finished in a stunning metallic paint which has an awesome purple/blue pearl. Having owned the vehicle for a number of years, the owner was aware that the paintwork had received some work and several areas had been re-painted. Our initial paintwork assessment and paint depth readings confirmed this, however the work had been carried out to a good standard and paint readings were reasonably consistent.

The car far from a garage queen, and is used regularly however is not a daily so is regularly washed, and stored indoors under a cover however it was clear that the paintwork was in need of some attention, and overall the car would benefit from a full detail process. It was agreed we would carry out a full interior treatment, including leather clean/feed and seal, as well as treat fabrics, chrome, wood and other interior surfaces. Additionally, carry out a two stage machine polish to remove swirl marks, scratches and restore gloss before finishing with a Carnauba wax by request of the client.

So, some before shots!

Sun peeking through gave us a brief look at the condition of the paintwork!

The car was fully washed/decontaminated using our usual process:

- High pressure rinse, followed by citrus based pre-wash to remove road grime, and dirt prior to contact
- Alloy wheels cleaned using AS Smart Wheels 10:1, using soft natural brushes and lambswool wheel woolies
- Tyres, Arches, Door Shuts and Engine Bay cleaned using AS G101 10:1
- Wash using Dooka Wash Pad, Auto Finesse Lather with 2BM
- Paintwork/wheels decontaminated using Iron X and AS Tardis

With the car washed, and dried off we set about taking care of the paintwork, and there was a LOT of it!

The paintwork was lightly machined polished mainly via DA, taking advantage of the Meguiars D-300 Microfibre Compound and DMC5 and DMF cutting and finishing pads. We opted for a DA approach as the white pin-striping which runs through each panel is hand painted, and we believed un-lacquered so DA allowed us to avoid generating excess heat. This did a great job of restoring the colour, and removing swirl marks and scratches.

Before:

50/50:

The paint was correcting nicely with several slow passes, restoring a fantastic gloss and making the flake really come to life.

50/50 shots under the Sun Gun:

Before:

After: (top section only, below pinstripe not polished!)

The tailgate had evidently been painted, and had some nasty RDS near the edge which were significantly reduced, however not fully removed due to their depth. These were removed via Merino Wool Pad, with Scholl S3+ Gold at around 1800 RPMS via Rotary.

Before:

After:

Not forgetting the headlights! These were glass, which made a pleasant change from modern plastic headlights (no rattling light fittings!)

Before:

After:

Moving around to the rear of the car, and the lower tailgate section.

And onto the rear lights!

We also took the opportunity to machine polish some of the chrome areas which were particularly scratched/faded. These were far from fully corrected, however they were massively improved and gloss/clarity restored!

Before:

After:

Of course, not forgetting some of the finishing touches, exhaust tip polished using Britemax Twins.

Before:

After:

Following the correction stages, the paintwork was refined before applying Auto Finesse Desire, chosen LSP for the paintwork. Once the interior was complete, glass cleaned, tyres dressed and the usual refinements complete, time for some finished shots! Enjoy!

Thanks for looking! Comments, questions etc welcome as usual!

Gaz and Nathan
