An Interview with James B from Autofinesse

auto finesse detailing valeting hertfordshire london essex

Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

Im James been valeting/detailing for nearly 10years (in october) and im from Hertfordshire

What else can I tell you about me?

Im quite motivated when it comes to my own business, but other than that i dont stick to much hobby wise i start something but then see something more exiting lol

How did you ‘get into’ detailing?

Needed a Job at 16 and came across a "valeting" job in the paper, got that after being asked why i wanted the job and replying "cos i need a job" i dont think they where to fussy, learned the ropes there and started up mobile "valeting" as soon as i got my licence, it went well and i progressed in to detailing, nearly 10 years on

How long have you been detailing at ‘this’ level?

At this level Ie all we do is detail and only do basic cleaning on cars that we have detailed already, 2 years

How did you learn to machine polish?

Had a few contracts de-stickering and preping vans for auction in 2002, we had to machining up the sides and front as to remove any signs of what the vans once where used for, this gave a good starting bed for learning some tricks of the trade.

How many cars have detailed over the years?

"detailed" we do around 3 cars a week Ie correction work, so around 120 per year X 2 =
240 ish

Tell me about your first detail
First paid full correction job was a Bently conti for an existing client, he booked it after me showing him what i had been doing to my van, all done with a PC and it was hard graft

What do you drive and how often is it detailed?
My van is every thing to me, my car and my van, i work and travel alot so feel i live in it some times, so i made sure i got some thing i like:

What is your favourite car to detail and why?

Black cars for the finish achievable, i like working on Evos as they have flat panels & med/soft paint.

Do you prefer to detail a Supercar or everyday car?
Supercars hands down.

What piece of detailing kit do you think every detailer should have in their arsenal? (excluding the obvious stuff like wash mitts etc.)

A good variety of polishes and pads is a must IMO and a PTG

What are your current favourite brands and why?
Auto Smart for the basics, Dodo for my general waxes etc, i also like Megs for pads and all the there bits like brushes etc that are made for the job.

What do you do when you’re not detailing?

every other part of the business like books, marketing, DW plays a large part also, after all the work is done if theres enough time between that and sleep, i like taking my dogs to the quary and playing Xbox live

A few quick fire questions
Ferrari or Lambo ? Lambo
Wax or Sealent ? sealant
Fish and chips or bangers and mash ? Fish and chips
McDonald's or Burger King? Burger king
Coffee or Tea? Tea
