Due to a change in job, I had to buy a car to see me through until I got a company car. (Having previously had a company car which I had to give up)

Spent ages looking round before deciding on a 2022 Ford Focus ST Line diesel with 5k on the clock. Bought it locally from a main dealer.

Fast forward a few weeks and I was allocated a company car meaning the Focus needed to go. Now I was expecting to lose some money on it but went for a newish car in order to minimise any losses.

Thoughts immediately turned to a route to sell - original dealer didn't want to purchase it back due to their stock levels and I didn't want the hassle of selling privately so decided to give WBAC a go.

Got a valuation which was ÂŁ1400 less than what I paid; not a bad start. Booked an appointment for Saturday morning and promptly rocked up with an immaculately presented car.

WBAC operate the top 5 grades for the condition of cars; there are 16 conditions in total (1 being a vehicle which has just come out of the factory, 2 being a brand new car with less than 100 miles etc). The text valuation you get is based on your vehicle being a grade 1 so the system is already flawed imo.

We get there and they check the vehicle over, they picked up a stone chip on the bonnet and maybe some minor flecks on each wing. Given it's pristine nature the chap is gagging to find stuff wrong with it but can't.

Moving to the office, we start to go through the paperwork and the V5C first. Their systems picked up a mis match on the description during the HPI check, after some phone calls and discussion the description is changed and that costs me a further ÂŁ500 off the valuation.

We then get into the damage and they start bleeting on about the costs and putting in auction etc, and that they want to get us the best deal before he delivers the price they will purchase the car at:

Original valuation -ÂŁ1400
HPI mismatch -ÂŁ500
Damage -ÂŁ1223

Total valuation is over ÂŁ3k from my original purchase price. We promptly left without agreeing a sale. I'm now pursuing a sale through Motorway which is only ÂŁ2.5k less than original purchase.

My main issue is that the original valuation is flawed as no car being sold to WBAC is going to be a grade 1 so as a seller you are already on the back foot. If a 2022 vehicle is going to lose 10% of a valuation then an older vehicle will be that much greater.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Good news on the sale and the new purchase! haha

Sounds like WBAC's version of 'damage' is what most people just refer to as wear and tear. Let's be honest, if the car is mint for it's age, it'll sell for good money and people won't expect it to be fresh from the factory. Easy way for them to knock off some value though, despite I suspect them moving it on for good money.

I think I'd probably only use a service like this for an older car which has little value as it sounds like an exercise in frustration.

"I'll have a chat with the Manager." Roughly translated, "let's see if their parachute didn't open in time." Convenience and an easy life comes at a price, I get that, but ripping-off people makes my skin crawl. Don't even get me started on admin fees.
Trying to find a new car at present, but it's depressing how much crap's out there. Same price, if not more, than it would have been 3 years ago.

Something in the mid-range seems to me to be the best bet. Yes, you'll lose money, but keep it a while and hopefully it'll even-out. Cars at the lower end seem woeful. M.O.T check service has saved me a lot of bother.
I'll probably just end up getting another civic from a Honda dealer.
