I've got a mk6 2.0 diesel with dsg. I've owned it for 4.5 yrs from new and covered 50k miles. Absolutely love it, no problems at all. Brilliant family car, good on the motorway, good round town. Does everything I could ever want from a car. Love it.
The one your looking at looks like a good spec and a very good price.
Go for it.
Atb, Jon.

I dont have any particular experience with the DSG gearbox apart from on newer cars and they seemed fine to me.

Therefore I can safely say I probably don't know what Im looking for (if anything)

I'll see if they get back to me via email before going 30 miles to go see it- otherwise Im giving it a miss as the place doesn't exactly have great reviews and some of them seem obviously fake (i.e. exactly the same reviews by people with the same name and only 1 review each)

Yep I saw them. I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt as they specialise in Alfa's and Land Rover!

Not sure why but something just looks amiss for me (accident damaged perhaps?), also don't like the fact he wont warrant it and it's a trade sale only...
Ive done a HPI check on it and its coming clear - seems a genuine enough car from the checks.

Early 122 can suffer timing chain issues the 7 speed dsg isn't the most reliable check for knocking on the box

Mot history looks OK although I'd be weary it's only done 500ish miles a year for the last two years
Yes, I did look through the MOT. The check I did on the car shows that TCS have had it for 2 years with the same photos (no idea what it looks like now) - originally listed at £8450 with full warranty etc.

There are a few cars on there which are "Trade sale, no warranty" and I presume they just want to get rid of them as they've been there a while.

Im not too concerned about the engine itself as I have a good friend who's a VAG specialist. The DSG box worries me though so that'd be the main thing Id be looking at.

Yes exactly! But I'd only know if I saw and drove the thing.

Just taken a closer look at the history and thee is something dodgy behaviour in terms of owners. Car is listed as having 1 owner. Yet, the hpi check is showing 3 owners (one seems to be the garage though) but it changed hands in 2014 and then 2015 after 1-2k miles. Fishy

Not had much to do with VAG recently but for my last DSG Golf I changed the transmission oil so if you are looking at Golfs keep that in mind. I did the change around 40k which is the suggested mileage on the MK5. Not sure about the later models. Bought all the fluid and did it myself with a new filter. Quite easy but you need be accurate or the box will suffer.

Update - TCS in Oldham havent got back to my countless emails.

Pulled a sneaky one and got a colleague to send an email to which they replied within a few hours and said the car is still for sale (note that they told me a deposit had been out on it but the advert didn't say this)

Now I think theyre basically trying to avoid me snooping around especially as my initial questions asked for up to date photos (they're 2 years old as the car check showed up the same advert on AT with same pics 2 yeas ago). I also asked about the DSG gearbox and whether the initial recall had been done. Additionally I asked about the car being sold as a trade sale and what that means if there's an issue a day/week down the line (at the end of the day, theyre still a dealer and therefore the rules still apply but they're trying to wiggle out of it)

So yes, as the countless reviews online mention - they appear to be a bunch of cowboys relying on distant buyers with poor car knowledge. I spoke to a few people who have bought from there on other forums, appears the Alfas are in poor mechanical nick and some have been refused test drives.

Therefore, I am no longer pursuing this - honestly reckon I'd do better at an auction

You know (and do now) it's the right thing.

Cripes, you gotta be careful these days haven't you!!! Scary!

I've generally always bought cars from our local dealer or ask them to find a me a car. Since they have been responsible for maintaining and servicing they know I will continue to give them my business, I know they make some money on the sale but they have never let me down yet.

Buying at auction, for me, no chance. I just would not do it. Doesn't matter how cheap it is.

It is best to buy from a half decent looking car dealer, maybe a VW or VAG specialist, and have some piece of mind, and pay the premium for it.

With even minor components costing big money on some cars these days, you have to be very careful.

In summary then, find a VW dealer nearby, tell them what you want, let them find it, and pay for a warranty.

After doing some research into the company, it does seem that they've let a lot of customers down. The Alfa Forum absolutely hate TCS - some of the threads on there are absolutely hilarious. They were particularly annoyed at TCS revving the guts off Alfa's when cold, not allowing test drives, non-refundable deposits when viewing and staff attitude.

Another guy on FB travelled 100+ miles to see a car he described as a "shed".

Glad I didn't bother going. Instead I might have found a 1.4 TSI manual MK5 (not MK6) privately which seems like a better option albeit its a lower spec with higher miles but hey, its also cheaper.
